Roundabout lanes?
« on: Aug 8th, 2012, 12:11pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

We have a new roundabout in town and it's causing plentry of confusion.

I join at 1 and want to leave at 3.

At 1, there are two lanes I can use to join. Exit 3 is a single lane.

There are no lane markings on the roundabout.

The problem is that half the traffic takes the blue car route around and the other half the red, leading to disputes as both try to exit at 3.

Is there a correct lane?

Yes, you can use either  Smiley

If everybody slowed down a bit, gave each other a bit more space and was a bit more courteous to each other then there wouldn't be a problem Smiley  I don't get the "this is my lane" attitude.

Aye.   What driving-Instructors teach is that everyone should be prepared to give-way on a roundabout.   Rule-of-thumb is, if the exit lane is passed Twelve-O-Clock then you should be entering in the right-hand-lane.   I used to instruct and examine Motorcyclists.

As there are no arrows or other signs I think this is 'an exit to the right' as defined below from the Highway Code as per Simmo's link.

When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
•signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
•keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave

When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
•signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
•keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
•signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
•select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
•you should not normally need to signal on approach
•stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
•signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

Tricky one but I'd go with Simmo. But it could do with some lane markings to spell it out

Right - I'll stick to the RED lane and try to be magnanimous when I'm carved up at the exit......

Roundabout oddities...
Anyone know the roundabout on the A53 ( Brian Clough Way ) ?
Don't think there is anything else like it ! Right turn through the centre...obviously traffic light controlled.

Another strange one is the roundabout on the A13 where you turn off to go to Canvey Island  Shocked

Matt, As driving is my job, it was an advantage to take the test and be ahead of others looking for work. Did mine in a 728i BMW. Tester said he was well impressed with the car and my driving Smiley

Think that's going to happen anyway whichever you use. Grin

Either make the exit 2 lanes or put better lane markings on the rbt.

Which will still be ignored. Grin

Anyone enjoyed the experience of a roundabout with satellite roundabouts located radially around the central one at each entrance?
There's one at Hatton Cross on the south east side of Heathrow. Not for the faint hearted, but in practice they work, just as long as everyone is confident.
Obviously, women can't do it, but us blokes are fine with it.
I suspect they were devised by a Frenchman....
