Any gardeners ?

Anyone know anything about why a Clematis vine should suddenly die ? We've had it for about 10 years & it's been happily covering the back fence until about a month ago. It flowered this Spring & seemed fine, but has suddenly died. Within the last month all the leaves have died & the stems are brittle with no evidence of green (sap) inside the stems....It's dead The Honeysuckle vine that is rooted about 2 feet away & has been there just as long is thriving. I've tried playing it some music....thought it might like a bit of Jethro Tull.....nothing ......Tried & bit of Metallica, still nothing ..... Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC...still no effect. Even tried a bit of Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Summer, obviously), but still no reaction Any keen gardeners on here that might be able to provide any reason as to why our Clematis is the only thing in our garden that has suddenly decided to kick the bucket

Hi JC It could be a fungal infection (Clematis Blight). It sometimes happens without rhyme or reason. Just cut it right down to the ground ( well about 3/6 inch above the base) and wait to see if it recovers next year. but clematis do sometimes suffer from die back. The weather has a lot to do with the problems. It has not been a good year for a lot of things this year. Its a case of wait and see.

We've had a climbing thing (can't remember what) that's been around for yonks snuff it early this year, replaced with a new clematis. About the same time also a small rose but that was extremely old.

i,m pretty sure it will be what,s called "clematis die back or wilt" a disease that affects clematis now and then, the tops just die away but the roots stay alive , it,ll probably start shooting again from the the base, if not this year probably next, depending on the variety,

Wow, I didn't thinK I'd get any replies & that most would think this post was a joke I've been cutting down one main stem today to see if there is any green in the middle & it seems to be okay below about four feet. It still means alot of cutting back & many years growth to get it back to how it was, but it seems, hopefully, that a majority of the thick stems may survive & re-shoot. Thanks all for the replies .....Maybe we should have a new Horticulture section

| That would come in handy when we have to put our Scorpio's out to grass.
