Differential change

Sad Hi all,
Can anyone help me. Ive just checked out a clonking from my Cossies rear end. It seems that there is about 2ins of movement at the back wheels before the prop shaft turns. I think this translates to about 1/4 to 1/2 in at the diff housing. does anyone have any idea on the amount of time it takes to change the Diff  and difficulty.
I am thinking of swapping it temporarly for the one on my 12 valve. I only noticed the noise yesterday so dont know how long it's been like it. Any advice/help greatly appreciated
Regards,

I think your looking at a couple of hours at least on a lift, more if your struggling with axle stands.
Check the ratio first before swapping. It would be better to change the diff once with the correct diff.
You will needsome strong torx keys better to use the socket variety.

SmileyThanks Ian,                      The reason I am thinking of a temp swap is because JR is S.O.R.N at the moment i.e lack of funds to tax & insure. Have been looking for a tag with the Diff ratio printed on it but cannot see one on either. Maybe Snoopy with his infinite font of knowledge can help. The good one is on an 2.9 12 valve, the duff?? one is on a Cosworth. Both Estates. As I said this will only temp swap to get me mobile
Regards,

SmileyThanks for the Info People. Much appreciated. I'm just about to tackle the removal from JR. I will see if I can take some pics & write up my experiences for the web Site if possible.

GrinRight, Have just finished removing the Diff from "JR".
Started at 10:30 am & finished at 2:30 pm. Not bad seeing as I haven't taken one out before. Using 2 ramps & a jack plus various tools. I will list all when I write it up. Also managed to take some pics. Will start the Cossie prep tomorrow (weather permiting, I'm doing it on the drive)

Grin Well have now completed the Diff change (12:30pm Sunday).Took the car for a 50 mile test drive. What a difference, the car is a lot smoother & quieter + a noticeable lack of a clunk when taking up drive. As I said before I dont rember any pre symptoms before I heard the 1st clunk on Friday, But it must have been present. A tribute to the sound insulation & build quality of the car. I will write up how I achieved the change & post it in the Usefull Links section of the site as soon as I can.
