EGR Pipe tightening

Further to the info on the main site I attempted to tighten my EGR exhaust connection this weekend.

Result was failure due to lacking a suitably long socket extension but access to the nuts is fairly quick and painless using the following process:-

- As per instructions remove left bank manifold. This requires the breather, airtemp sensor and three vacuum lines to be disconnected.

- Leave the throttle body alone, rather take a socket and extension bar and locate socket onto the top nut.

- Using a long (or several shorter) extension bars introduce via the right hand side and connect to the socketted extension. The Halfords sockets which can swivel help.

- Loosen or tighten. This requires 3/8 or 1/2 drive as the nuts are likely to be tight due to the high temperatures. As the connection is upstream of the cat penetrating oil should be used very sparingly.

- Keeping the extension bars together withdraw the socket from the top nut, and once clear of the two transducer pipes then guide the socket to the bottom nut.

You need about 50cm's of extension ideally more and given the high torque high quality ones recommended.

To work on the EGR valve connection the only way I could see was to use a crows foot socket (19mm I think).

Total time spend was about 60mins, thanks to the photos and instructions on this site. Next weekend I should have the right length of 3/8 extension bars plus a set of crows foot sockets (this car is turning into a money pit!) and would guess second time round should be quicker.
