Aftermarker stereo in 98 Scorpio

Afternoon chaps. Anyone fitted a single DIN aftermarket stereo into a late scorpio with the large style stereo? My M reg one in pieces has a single din slot and then a little tray thing underneath. If I take out the Ford unit in the 98 car can I just fit new stereo and tray underneath or do I need some adaptor?
Quite pleased with this headunit as Alpine make leads specifcally to connect it to a Scorpio so that the stalk controls will still work...which is nice
