Electrical Probs ???

Hi
I have just bought a 1996 2.9 24v Ultima in fantastic condition except that the aerial is broken and the auto tint rear view mirror is broke, no problem i thought and proceeded to remove the front interior light, then i removed the plastic cover from the windscreen side of the mirror and then the plastic sunroof motor cover i thought i'd have a look at how they came off tonight before going to the scrappers tomorrow to get replacements.
But now after i have replaced the cover and interior light the following do not work

1, interior lights(they don't come on at all NOT EVEN WITH THE REMOTE)
2, the lights that shine on the floor when the doors are  opened
3, the light around the vanity mirror

also the alarm that tells if you are trying to start the car when its in gear (auto) is on all the time when you are driving ?
I have checked all the relivent fuses, would disconnecting the battery reset everything or is there something else i can do............HELP PLEASE !

 Huh

Hi there Dean

Welcome to the mad house Grin Grin Grin

There have been problems simular to yours in the past and if you have checked all the fuses It sounds like you may have a power relay fault. Quite common.
Not sure where the power relay is located but if Snoopy or STN is about I am sure they will know.

It may be worth disconnecting the battery for an hour or two and see if that does a reset for you first. Just an idea . Oh by the way do you have a battery cover fitted, If not you may have water in your fuse box. Not good.

Let us know how you get on, and if you need any more help just shout.

Hi Alan
thanks for the info, i'll try disconnecting the battery tomorrow but didn't want to just do it incase it caused any other probs........ as i said in my first posting iv'e just bought the beast in fact only 2 days ago, but i have spent the last 7 weeks activatly looking for the right car, i suppose this serves me right for messing about in the first place, the problem is that iv'e had a couple of Grannys in the past the last of which originally being a 2.0 2wd (K reg) that i converted to a 2.9 4x4, but the Scorpio is a much more complicated animal altogether from what i can see.....

Oh yes

The scorpio is a complicated machine but It do have a lot of little tricks tucked away in it somewhere. Like a instrument reset and you can read the battery voltage, engine temp, injector cycle ect, ect. from the drivers seat, ?Just by pressing and holding the odometer button in for a couple of seconds. and then scroling through the display.
I will stop waffling on now but.
Before you disconect the battery make sure you have the radio code.?

Good luck

Hi
I tried disconnecting the battery today but this did not solve the problem, but i did traced the scource of the alarm noise i get when the car is in anything other than park, it is the same box that gives the alarm to warn that the headlamps have been left on ? does anyone think that i could have shorted this unit whilst removing the interior light ? as i might have stuck the screwdriver in too far behind the light unit, is this the same unit that controls the entry/exit lights ? i am going to try to get one of these 'black boxes' from the scrap yard and swap it over........fingers crossed

Hi Dean.
Not sure about the alarm stuff but with regard to the interior lights, have you checked all fuses? There's another one which can affect these lights which is the power saver fuse (no.36). Its a 10amp (red one) in the auxilliary fuse box. I would try that first. While you're in that box, the power saver relay is there too (no.R16).
These may or may not be related to the alarm as well, I don't know  Undecided  Only one way to find out. Good luck.

NIce one Paul, it is probley that fuse, the alarm you get with the lights on is "Ding Dong Ding Dong" the alarm you get with the door open and in any position other than Park is " Diiiiinnnnngggg" continusly and are unrelated. as paul says double check all related fuses with a meter it is likely that you have blown it while ding the previous work. after all there is a costant live to the power save feed going to the interior lights, floor lights and radio. I think all shuts down after 1 hour. somebody will correct me here.

One test for you. turn on the ignition to activate the power save and then turnit off, try using the radio it should work without the key if not, well it is as paul says.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all you help and support, i hope i won't need to call on you again but i think i probably will
