hi ppl just new to the site, i have a 1995 ultima 2.0 16v auto..when you are driving (in D eco) it seems to jump in and out of drive i think back to neutral, then slams back in to drive again..other than this the car is perfect.the problem seems to be intermitant, if you sort of play with the selector it goes away for a while..as you can imagine its a pain....any ideas...please help!

Hi Ignore if I am stating the obvious but have you checked the level of g/box oil, do that first in the correct manner ie after a run and when oil is at working temperature select P and then all other positions do this three times and then check with dipstick and while your under the bonnet you would be wise to clean the MAF with carb cleaner I hope this cures the problem but if not take it to a g/box specialist and seek advice, good luck. Yep, could be your auto fluid is low. As Kenboy says, it's important to test it correctly - from cold it'll always show that there's plenty fluid. So why could your fluid be low.... I've got the same model as you so watch out for rusting of the pipes that take auto fluid to and from the gearbox. Why they made them out of a material that'd rust is just one of those things - welcome to owning a Ford Scorpio.

Hi If it is your oil cooler pipes that need replacing then my advice to you and every one else is to treat them with a rust preventive prior to fitting there are some real good products on the market now and a 15 minute job will stop this occuring again any good luck and let us know how you get on. regards Kenboy

The likely cause of your problem is failure of the manual selector (prngl) box. This is a small box which sits on the input shaft of the gearbox. Typical symptoms are intermittent changing of gear, I.e. slipping into neutral or first then back into gear with a jolt is usually the first sign, later , incorrect timing of changes when accelerating and harshness when changing. Driving with this fault can quickly cause internal damage to the box so needs to be fixed ASAP. You will need to get professional diagnosis to confirm this is the problem Unfortunately it is not a diy job, cost of parts are about £50, Labour will be about £250ish. Have the input shaft oil seal changed at the same time as failure of this will cause problems again. I would also advise at the same time having the oil changed and the converter flushed as it will have probably already have thrown up some muck into the oil.

I have had probs with the auto box on my 24v. If I have been stationary in traffic and move off the engine revs and the car moves of slowly. If I change it 2nd and up into drive its fine.

As I mentioned earlier if the prngl box is the cause you will wreck your gearbox quickly if you do not rectyfy it. Sounds the same as mine, and in a period of a month threw up a lot of swarf into the oil which had to be changed.

The switch needs to be aligned properly which needs specialists equipment, also access is a problem and I think the box needs to be lowerd a little.
