Hi

I am posting this on behalf of a friend, he has a 2.0 Ultima whilst driving it seems as if it changes from drive to neutral (starts revving high) then back into Drive.

Has anyone got any ideas

Thanks

Smiley Hi Pete,
I do agree with above . Go about it as follows:-
Start engine, With brakes applied move the gear selector lever over its full range several times. Select neutral, with engine still running check autobox fluid level.

Hi, Sounds like it maybe yet another car needing the MAF cleaning. My car did this which is also a 2.0 auto ultima. It was very noticable on motorways on the flat or going downhill.Yes check gearbox oil but check MAF also, its well documented on the site.

As I mentioned in a simila post a few days ago which was ignored, The likely cause of the problem is failure of the manual selector (prngl) box.  This is a small box which sits on the input shaft of the gearbox. Typical symptoms are intermittent changing of gear, I.e. slipping into neutral or first then back into gear with a jolt is usually the first sign, later , incorrect timing of changes when accelerating and harshness when changing.

Driving with this fault can quickly cause internal damage to the box so needs to be fixed ASAP.

You will need to get professional  diagnosis to confirm this is the problem

Unfortunately it is not a diy job, cost of parts are about £50, Labour will be about £250ish. Have the input shaft oil seal changed at the same time as failure of this will cause problems again. I would also advise at the same time having the oil changed and the converter flushed as it will have probably already have thrown up some muck into the oil.
