HELP Rear End Noise

Hi Guys
Just Came back from a 150 mile trip and I have a noise comming from my rear end. The noise have been getting worses over the past few weeks, but tonight it got realy bad. Crusing at 70mph the ride is just a bit unconfortable, Feels something is not quite ballanced right and sent vibrations all down the car. After about 50 miles my back was realy starting to feel it. Also when I accelerated upto 90 mph the noise was like that of and aeroplane just about to take off and my ears felt as if they were going to pop.
I have changed the following parts in the past few months.
Both rear wheel bearings and hub
Nearside outside CV Joint
Cleaned out the MAF meter
Checked the oil in the Diff
Do you think that I am looking at a new diff??
Also I have noticed that if I accelerate hard I get a knock from the rear end.

Check the prop shaft joints for any movement.

Checked the prop shaft. All seems ok. What a job I had lowering the exhaust enough to get the heat shield off.
Do anyone know if there is an easy way on checking the diff. Bear in mind I will be working on my own with only axel stands to help me.??

I think that my diff is at fault
Tonight I jacked the car up and played with the diff. I tried turning it from where the prop enters and I discoverd that there was a lot of free movement before the driveshaft would turn. also by turning one driveshaft I would have to turn it about 50mm before the other shaft would engage. When I took out the filler plug I found some metal filings as well so that is why I think it is the diff. 
What do you think.??
Is it easy to change on your own. It looks straight forward but the exhaust looks to be in the way. could it be changed without taking the exhaust off. Oh by the way it is the 24v cosi.

You will find there is free movement in the diff drive and it is very diffacullt to assertain whether there is a problem in that way. The swarf in the oil is indicating wear but that does not mean that the diff is the problem. Diffs usualy make a distinctive whining noise which changes pitch the faster you go. If you are not 100% sure then pop it down to your local grease monkey who can put it on a rolling road and give a definate answer before putting in all that hard work and dosh.

Remove
Remove the rear part of the exhaust system.
Raise the vehicle.
Disconnect the exhaust system at the centre flange (two bolts).
Unhook the rear part of the exhaust system from the rubber mountings and lay it to one side.
Detach the front exhaust system heat shield.
Detach the rear exhaust system heat shield.
Release the driveshaft centre bearing.
Unscrew the two bolts securing the centre bearing to the floor assembly.
Slacken the remaining bolts of the centre bearing.
CAUTION:
The driveshaft is finely balanced using bolts of different lengths. Mark the installation position of the driveshaft and the bolts.
Detach the driveshaft from the rear axle.
Note:The transverse brace is discontinued for vehicles from Jan '96.
Detach the transverse brace from the rear axle.
Remove four bolts.
Slide the driveshaft forwards, detach it from the rear axle flange and suspend it to one side.
Vehicles with petrol engines only Detach the EVAP canister.
Loosen the bolt on the bracket, unhook the EVAP canister and tie it up to one side.
Detach the rear axle driveshafts on the right- and left-hand sides (vehicle to Jan. '95 shown).
Unscrew the bolts.
Tie up the rear axle driveshafts.
Remove the gaskets.
Vehicles to Dec. '95 only
Detach the left-hand stabiliser bar bracket.
Vehicles to Dec. '95 only
Detach the rear axle assembly suspension.
Support the differential assembly on a transmission jack.
Vehicles to Dec. '95 only
Detach the mounting from the differential cover.
Lower the differential assembly slightly.
Vehicles to Dec. '95 only
Detach the differential assembly from the crossmember (four bolts).
Lower the differential assembly.
Vehicles from Jan. '96 only
Detach the rear axle assembly suspension.
Support the differential assembly on a transmission jack.
Remove the bolt.
Vehicles from Jan. '96 only
Detach the rear axle assembly suspension from the rear axle assembly.
Lower the rear axle assembly with transmission jack until the bolts can be removed.
Unscrew the bolts.
Note o not tighten the bolts.
Attach the rear axle assembly suspension to the floor assembly (one bolt).
Raise the rear axle assembly with transmission jack.
Screw in the bolt finger tight.
Vehicles from Jan. '96 only
Detach the rear axle assembly bracket from the crossmember.
Vehicles from Jan. '96 only
Detach the rear axle assembly bracket from the rear axle assembly.
Lower the rear axle assembly with transmission jack until the bracket can be detached.
Unscrew and remove two bolts and one nut.
Detach the rear axle assembly bracket from the rear axle assembly and tie it up at the side.
Vehicles from Jan. '96 only
Lower the rear axle assembly with transmission jack.

Thanks for all that it sounds like a lot of work. I dont think I will be doing that job then. But I will get a second opinion Before I get one.
Do you know how long it will take to fit and any Idea of the cost??
Just another question you said that the driveshafts are ballanced by the bolts.
You got me thinking now?? When I baught the car 6 months ago I had no problem untill the rear wheel bearings went. So changed both wheel bearings one side at a time BUT while doing so I took the whole driveshaft off due to a worn cv joint. Me NOT knowing put all the bolts in a container Mixing them up. So I wonder if that is my problem.( put the wrong bolts in causing the dirveshaft to be out if ballance) If so how do I get arround it.??
Are the bolts in the diff end one size and the ones on the wheel side a diffrent length ??

Thanks for all your help and advice, I am prety sure now that I am looking at a ballanceing problem now, Ony thing now is either find someone who is in the know how.?I will have a look through the phone book tommorow and try and find a decent garage which wount rip me off and WILL do a good job.
Now that will be a challenge wount it??
I may also ask arround my mates and work mates if they could recomend a garage in my area.
If Anyone else is reading this and knows of a good garage in the Neath - Port Talbot and Swansea area please let me know.

The balanced bolts are in the proshaft flange where it meets the differential, not the driveshafts, where the bolts are not balanced.
The symptoms you describe sound more serious than balancing. Get the rear of the car up on axlestands as high as you can and work systematically through the tranmission. Twist the propshaft against its UJs and check for play. Do the same for the CV joints on both driveshafts and make sure the bolts on the one you replaced haven't worked loose. If you can feel any axial looseness movement in the joints then they need replacing.
The amount of free play on the diff sounds ominous. There is a pre-loaded bearing on the drive in the diff which should take up any wear, and if you can move the prop 50mm before the driveshafts move then there's a serious amount of free play.
If all the CVs and UJs are okay then the diff is favourite. The instructions sound daunting but its very easy to take out the diff. You just need to mark each bolt that comes out of the propshaft flange and put them back in the same place in the flange.
A new diff is approx £750 from Ford, so I would search out one from a scrapper. Check before you take it that there is negligable free play on the flange, and that it is for the Cosworth. I can post the part nos if you need them.

you shouldnt have any back and forth movement on the driveshafts. I mean pulling towards the diff and pushing towards the wheel. ?
You shouldnt be able to twist the driveshaft from front to back.?
And then uj joint on the prop you shouldnt be able to twist that back and forth either.?
Am I correct in what I am thinking, ?I know it sounds dull but I would rather know before I do it again Before I screw something else up on the car.
