Engine Speed sensor

does anybody know the symptons of a failing engine speed sensor on a 2.5 td
I had a diagnostic check done which came up with 4 codes
P1225 unknown which i think is a throttle self test sensor
P0725 engine speed sensor fault
P1503 unkown
P0100 mass air flow fault
I havejust ordered an engine speed sensor from main dealer at £120
and i dont want to fit it and still have the same problem
the syptoms i have is the engine cuts out at junctions intermitently and when driving the car misfires intermitently

Is there an intake 'IDLE CONTROL VALVE'-on a diesel?
Sort of symptoms that occur when one of these is thingyy on a petrol car
