Bit of a 'Backward' quetion?

Hello everyone

Try to explain this as best as I can so here goes----- 16v 2ltr Auto.
Car starts fine, runs fine, changes through gears fine and is giving the expected mph. but when ever I select reverse there is a slight pause (1/2-1sec )and a loud thump that seemingly comes from the diff. I've checked the bolts on the drive shaft for looseness and none was found. She reverses fine no probs but then when I select drive from being in reverse there is another bump but no where near as loud infact it's hardly noticeable. There are no other probs manifesting themselfs with the car but as you can imagine it's abit embarassing when your car emits an audible thump when you select reverse.
Please, is there anyone with a pionter to help me cure this annoying habit my car has developed  Embarassed

Thanks Pete but I'm afraid it made little or no difference beacause it was quite clean before I sqirted it again.  It still does the same thing as mentioned before. I have also checked the transmition fluid level and it is fine both for level and condition so if there is anything else for me to look at I would appreciate any pointers.

Thanks Smiley

I think you will find this is now likely to be wear in the diff itself. No adjustment unfortunatly. This is caused by normal wear and tear.Only answer -replace with a known good unit or exchange diff. john.n Embarassed

I don't have an answer, but it appears that delayed reverse on the A4LD is a common problem - I've seen one site (can't remember which, but it was in the USA) suggesting a delay of up to 2 secs is fine. There do seem to be some fixes out there, but might not be worth the bother - I've had mine with the same fault for three years now, hasn't got worse.

Of course you'd expect extra wear on other components, but as I say in three years nothing's come to light.

mmmmm Huh,  the loud thump is annoying to say the least and it looks like I will try and go for a replacement diff etc. later on.  Anyhow thanks for the replies, it is much appreciated.
