advice wanted re: Ultima TD Automatic

I'm considering getting an R reg Diesel but i'm a bit concerned over something i found on the net: Alternator failure on 2.5TDs (instead of 120 amp alternators, some Turbodiesel models were fitted with 75 amp alternators which are not up to the job and cost £900 to replace with 120 amp units). Now, is there anyway I can check this beore I consider buying it? The dealer wants nearly £5k (it's only got 40000 on the clock) so I want to make sure i'm not going to get a hefty bill too soon for replacing the alternator!
I've been advised by other posters to this forum to look around as I could pick up an Ultima 2.3 for around £2000 but i've had no luck Sad Where I live (in Peterborough) i've found 3, but all have problems (cracks in front grill, excessive scratches on bumpers, BIG chips out of headlights etc).

Any advice would be most welcome!!

5k sounds a lot .What warranty do you get?Try the net
fish4cars or ebuyer. If you could save yourself a couple of grand could pay for the odd new grill or repair stone chips.
Good luck.if you haven't owned one before you won't be sorry you bought one !

I too think that 5k is over the odds. It must be a very clean and special price for that kind of money. If you look hard enough im sure you will find another car. Or if it is the weaker alternator, why not ask the dealer to knock off the cost of a replacement.
