Hi everyone.  i have the 2.9 12 valve version,  think i would be dead now if i brought the cozzie.  I'm getting the auto box falling out of gear when pulling up to a junction etc.  Getting nice wheel spins when pulling off though Grin I've read loads of bits on this forum which say check the auto gear box oil level.  But cant find one which says how.  no idea if im being stupid but, i dont have a manual, so no idea how to check the level.  Could someone please let me know.  Cheers Jason

Smiley Hi Jason,
To check the G/box level on the 12v as Follows:- Bring car up to working temp. With engine running, cycle gear select lever between park and 1st a few times. Select neutral and check level on dipstick at L/Hand rear of engine bay. If low Fill up to correct level via dipstick hole.

Now find out why the box was dry!

An inspired guess would be the pipes to the gearbox oil cooler at the front of the car are corroded and weeping fluid. Either drop the undertray yourself and check the pipes, or take the car to autobox specialist for a once over.

When these finally go you'll dump ~2 gallons of ATF on the road and come to a complete halt!

cheers i will check,   the car was parked up for about 6 months before i brought it because the guy before me could not afford to run it,  Ive had it about 3 months I know i should have done a full service straight away but never had time,  I'm doing one tomorrow before anything else goes wrong.   But also the power steering fluid has become very low, about an inch or two from the bottom so are these prone to leak or have i just got a major problem.  The car has been awesome since buying it, and im hoping the geearbox oil will be the only problem i find.   Thanks alot Jay.

The power steering fluid pipe from the reserviour  to the pump are prone to weeping.. it can be fixed by tightening the jubilee clips top and bottom of the rubber pipe... Make sure that its NOT dripping onto the alternator as it can cause it to fail... if it has wipe off with rags DO NOT WASH THE OIL OFF...

If its not the pipes then check the rack itself and also the power steering cooler at the front.. is like an extended 'U' infront of the auto box oil cooler...

Cheers

Whilst on the subject, can I strongly advise inspection of the large power steering pipes UNDER the car.

One goes from PUMP to RACK and is badly routed over a steel block on front of x-member.Mine was so badly worn I had to replace it for peace of mind.

The other goes from RACK to COOLING ELEMENT at base of radiator-on my car it was routed behind the pump and wore a hole where it was in contact with a support bracket.

You will unfortunately have to remove the undertary to gain access-4 small torx screws.
