query about the 2.5 alternator

I seem to recall that somewhere it's mentioned that some of the 2.5 TDi model were released with an alternator that wasn't powerful enough and needed to be replaced with a 120 version, and to check beforehand as it would cost around £900 to get it done. Can someone confirm this for me as I have spent the last 90 minutes searching this site & the ford scorpio site but can't find it!

Sounds expensive for an alternator. Does this include a wiring upgrade as well?
If the 24V alternator is the same as the one you need, i have 2 for sale.

The Td one is different as it has the vaccum pump for the servo.

Cookie,
Yes, this is true. A TSB dealt with the subject in 1/4/97. The problem is that the alternator is mounted in front of the vacuum pump, and the heat from this pump cooks the diode part of the alternator, further reducing its lower output and producing charging problems.
A pack is available which changes the mountings for the vacuum pump and moves the larger alternator over to the other side - it's a lot of parts and machinery and this is why it would cost something like £800.
To another diesel owner I suggested that he might be able to shroud the rear of the alternator with a peice of alloy to shield it from the heat, and maybe rig up a cooling fan with ducting to the alternator and keep it cooler, a few degrees would make all the difference, but I don't know how he got on. You can buy small fans and plastic ducting from kit car parts places and this would be very much cheaper.

it's a moot question now as the garage sold it Sad
I'm really disparing in getting a scorpio now. I want the 2.3 or 2.5 TDi Ultima (last spec with tinted h/lights etc)  preferably in metallic blue/green and have held off buying as i keep reading on this site that I should be able to pick up  a low mileage one for approx 3-4k but i've has b****r all luck Sad
I'm not the most technically minded person and want one that I can just get in and drive - with the minimum of problems/expenditure - that's all!

I can see myself getting something else....
