auto box dumping oil

i have given a auto box for a 2.9 to a mate of mine in work he has put it in his car and it worked fine for a few miles,then it dumped the oil on the road.He has put 3 auto boxes in the car and they have all done the same thing. Can anybody throw some light on this problem

Has the box and torque converter been changed?
Or just the box?

It is a well documented fault on the Scorpio... that's wher I would be looking.. it surely cannot be the same fault on THREE boxes....

 The oil was leaking from the bellhousing, I agree for one box to go well, but for a total of 4 boxes doing the same ?

If the front seal is the culprit one has to ask why? Is it being over filled and therfore gettting too much pressure build up.. I have never heard of this happening on 4 boxes in succession .. you/he is obviously doing something wrong.......unless it is sheer coincidence.....others might have more knowledge on this one.... Very strange!

Check your vent tube on top of the transmission. If it gets plugged then oil will push past the torque Converter shaft seal and do this.
Also if your friend overfills it, oil will shoot out of the same vent and it will look like a bellhousing leak. Been there. Got the puddle on my parking pad to prove it.
Our A4LD auto's and 4R44E/4R55E/5R55E trannys are pretty much the same as yours, and this is the usual culprit.

The temperature of the water is also high when the oil dumps on the floor, he is changing the oil cooler for the transmision fluid,this weekend so I will keep you posted.

Just make sure that the oil is at the right level... The gear box oil level has to be checked when HOT and with the engine running.. It makes a lot of difference to the levels if this is not done correctly
The correct procedure is Go for a run get it up to temp and then put the car through the gears whilst stationary two or three times, leave the engine running and then check the level and of course it must be on level ground......
It does sound as though it has been over filled...

Good news about the box the rad & oil cooler has been changed a new oil seal fitted & the car has done a couple of thousand miles with no futher problems with the oil leaks .
It looks as if the gearboxes that where fitted where ok,but because the oil was over pressurising it was blowing straight throw the seal,because the oil couldn't cool down because the oil cooler was blocked.
I am glad the problem has been solved
