TD Turbo lack of boost

Hi there, I posted this problem initially last September, and I still haven't sorted it! Its a lack of tubo boost (there appears to be very little) - a Ford agent and another garage say its not the turbo but is a control problem somewhere! I've now tried a couple of things and eliminated the MAP and MAF sensors. I am now trying to see if the wastegate is at fault (i.e. by forcing it closed). Does anyone know the direction of travel for the wastegate valve - does it spring open or closed? Anyone else got any bright ideas??! Regards, Jonathan

Hi jdunham More info needed: Why do you think there is a lack of boost?, is it because there is a lack of power or do know the turbo is not producing the boost presure it should. Not familiar with the engine but the wastegate should be shut & will spring open at peak boost to act like a safety valve.

Hi Howie... Thanks for the info. Its a lack of performance, it has come and gone a couple of time, but now no boost. You can see the turbo is spinning ok through the air inlet. Ford allegedly tested is as part of the test they did on their computer, but couldn't find the real cause! Regards, Jonathan

Hi there, Yes thanks I read that. That's why I spend £110 on a new sensor which unfortunately did nothing! I think I'll have to find a specicialist or just sell the car and take a loss. Rgds, Jonathan

Try the basic's first, look for air leaks, is the air filter clean, what colour smoke comes out the back if any, is there any funny noises & what milage are you getting? I assume Ford confirmed the turbo was O.K.

What's your oil pressure like? Turbochargers use alot of oil to keep the impeller shafts floating inside the bushings. If you have any restriction, dirt, or plugged up bearings it could cause the impeller to drag enough to do next to nothing. They only ride on a film of oil that is no more than .003" thick (aproximate). This has come up with our large truck diesel engines (Detroit, Catapillar, Navistar, etc). The oil filter has to be of a higher quality and tighter filtering than the standard off-the-shelf filters. Also it might be a good idea to check your oil pressure with a mechanical guage tapped in to the oil pressure sender port.
