Can't find my original post, and I don't know which forum to put this in - but to whoever advised me to replace my steering rack, and pointed out buypartsby.co.uk, many, many thanks!
Not only is the steering now as new, there must have been a heck of a drain on the pump, because the car runs smoother, gearchanges are better, and I'm using less fuel. Amazing.
Last weekend I drove 500 miles in one day - fresh as a daisy. Not bad for a nine year old car with nearly 100k on the clock!
