Ticking noise 2.0 l 16 v manual

I have a 2.0 l 16v (1996)Scorp estate with manual transmission. I own the car for two years now, no significant problems up to now. Yesterday however i suddenly experienced "ticking noises" during driving. The noise came from the area in between the ash tray and the base of the gear shift lever. It is not there when accellerating, but it is immediately present when decelerating (holding back power). When keeping constant speed, the ticking noise slowly grinds down to a halt. I have no idea what it can be. At least I do not suspect my rugged MT 75 gearbox. Anybody have any ideas? Rob

Have you tried de-clutching when its ticking? if it stops then could be a problem in clutch/related bits. eddie
