idling puzzled

hi peeps
the problem i have is on starting the car on a morning i have no problems.
(2.9 ultima v6 n reg 122000 miles fsh)
however by the time i get two miles into my journey to work i have to stop at traffic lights on an incline i leave the gear in d come to a full stop and the car rolls back about 6 inches before the gear holds it steady by the time i get to work about a 12 mile journey the car is also idling erratically although the tacho doesnt show this you can feel the engine revs going up and down slightly.
i have checked the auto fluid and it is a med brown colour in fact the same colour as the power steering fluid
it doesnt smell or taste funny (dont laugh).
before i spend money i dont have does anyone have any ideas about this problem.
just bought the car about 6 weeks ago after having driven granada/scorpios for years.
an all round good car but this problem is driving me crazy i keep thinking im going to leave my auto box on the a 595 some morning i have a day off today so i am going to do some work on it today
