Cosworth 24v head gasket

I have been informed due to a water leak from head that i need new gasket, anyone know what this is likely to cost me? And any information that might help as to any other surprise that might arise from gasket going, it has not gone yet but losing water from max to min over 3-5 days. Have been told that can still drive it but will need doing.

who says that its from the head gasket and why stevie ? .. what year is the car ? ..unless your sure ..then it's more likely to be the hose between the heads .. methodical job rather than hassle ..but prepare for almost certain wiring woes between the heads .. see what everyone thinks first ... regards ...STN

Also check that the radiator isn't on its way out. Have a look at the bottom and see if the thing is "bellying"
 
I have had a few of these go on my red Scorpio and the one on my lowish mileage new one is goosed as well. I have a few spare rads so not a dear job, but it is worth changing the stat and expansion bottle as well

I would check out all the possibilities of leaking hoses etc before even considering head gasket.. as STN and Baz state well worth looking before embarking on that road,,,, I know the 24 v is well know that the hose between the heads and the associated pipes can and do corrode causing a lot of probelms and its well documented on the main site.  Good Luck,

It may also be worth looking at the alloy water manifold that joins the top hose to the heads. Mine was corroded and the “O” rings were shot. This also let water leak into the loom which caused all sorts of problems with the auto box.

I posted a similar enquiry a week or so ago and the bad news. Steviegee,  is £600-800 for a non-Ford garage.  
The relatively good news - as Baz's reply to this post suggests - is that's on hold as they found a minor leak from the rad under pressure test. Having replaced the rad, water 'consumption' seems to have stopped.
 
However, I was told that gas presence in the water indicates there may still be an underlying gasket problem.
 
As an extension of this post, can anyone explain that? Would an increase in water pressure from a gasket leak cause the rad to fail, making water loss more noticeable?

If you have a head gasket weakness that  exhausts  into the  cooling system  then you will certainly have increased pressure in the cooling system.  This will put a strain on any weak points on the cooling system as happened to me in  an ols scorpio of mine.

Well thanks all for the replys, firstly the garage did mention about the hose between the V it was the first thing he said it could be. They said they would pressure test it, I then got the phone call to tell me that there was a slight leak from the edge of the head, and although not gone the gasket would certainly need replacing, asap. This where the water is coming from, it is then dripping down onto the bottom plate cover under the engine and then dripping from this to the floor, which is how i found the leak in the first place, then I noticed the water level dropping from max to min in 4 days or so. (dash light comes on at first then goes off once warm, when the level drops a bit more the light stays on)
