Engine stalled!

Here’s a good one for all you specialists

(M reg.) 2.9 12v. saloon. Ultima. Auto..
Started car, and crept along in a traffic jam for about 20 minuets, the climate control on, and when the traffic cleared cruised along at about 45/50 mph. Suddenly the engine cut out. Pulled over and scratched my head for a while then tried to start the engine. It coughed and spluttered back to life but stalled each time I put it in Drive.
After several attempts managed to keep the dammed thing running (But had the Climate Control off) until I got home about 1 hour later. This included lots of left foot breaking to keep the engine revs up.
I have had a similar problem a couple of times before relating to the Climate Control but that time I was cruising at about 70 mph (with cruise control on) and the engine would miss-fire but I would simply turn off the A/C and this would rectify the problem.
Any ideas where to lookHuh

I would suggest checking and cleaning the idle control valve first.

Lets hope she's better soon..

Thanks Phuturephantasy. I presume that the idle control valve is the silver barrel shaped item about 3” long by 1” diameter? I will check it out soon.
As long as I don’t use the Climate Control there’s no problem.

I find that the connection between the A/C being on and engine problem strange! Could there be a way of the condensation from the Air Conditioning Unit getting on the electrics or fuse/relays somehow?

I can't really get my head around this one Its very strange.... there should not be any way for condensation to get from the A/C heat exchanger onto the electrics unless the  drain pipes are blocked.. If there is too much load on the engine then I suppose it would cut out but the ecu is there to sense the increased load and compensate for it automatically... does sound electrical though ... Will keep thinking but others might have ore to say on this one... Very strange

have a look her http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/drainholes.htm

and here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acdrain.htm

I do have to ask have you got a battery cover fitted?

check the wiring harness thats connected to the injectors , they easily get damaged and can cause those probs you mentioned Huh Shocked

All the drainpipes are clear.
I will look into the wire harness at the injectors, but as I only get problems when the climate control is running, and even then only sometimes, I don’t hold out much hope on that. I serviced the engine several weeks ago but I had the problem long before and it didn’t reoccur until now.
I turn the A/C off each time I drive now and there is no problem. By the way when the A/C is on the engine does not labour extensively.

Snoopy
Do you mean carry out a voltage check now e.g. standing voltage, engine running then with A/C on or check it next time there is a problem? As it may be some time be for I put the A/C on!!!

Yes thats what we want more info.. when you switch on the A/C do you have a big voltage drop or is every thing normal?

It seems strange as the A/C is a mechanically driven compressor and the only electrical bit is the clutsh onthe compressor along with of course the obligatory fans.... but they are dual speed anyway..

I was trying to see if there was anything obvious with regards a voltage drop when the ac was switched on like a short occurring or heavy current drain .. but for the life of me I can't think why that should be... Just trying to cover all the bases so to speak..

Hope thatexplains my train of thought! If I have one.... Grin

Embarassed i must have went away to do another obd2 scan.

To all who have given me advice.

Just noticed something strange today.

When I was waiting at the side of the road, in park, I noticed that the tick over kept dropping from just under 1000 rpm to about 400 rpm and then back up again with out stalling. At the same time there was a clicking coming from the engine compartment. I had the Climate control on but the A/C off. I quickly popped the bonnet and noticed that the A/C compressor was engaging (This was the click) causing the engine revs to drop. I turned off the climate control and the engine ran smoothly.

I will have a good look soon, but now I suspect that the root of the problem may lie in a short some ware

hi there

do you know that the a/c will run all the time (cycle), when the dial is set to de-mist? could be your compressor is starting to sieze up. when did you last have a re-gas done?

I didn’t realise that the A/C ran when on demist, is that even if the A/C button is pressed turning it off, I’ll see what happens when running on other settings.

I’ve never had it re-gassed since I’ve owned the car & I’ve had it for about 3 ½ years.

Also I have a niggling problem (that may be connected) and I will have to look into, and that is the left hand control (off/Auto/Man) must have a dodgy connection as it sometimes turns its self off and on again, A bang on the dash normally sorted that out (I suppose I should have been a T.V. repair man).

just a quick note i own a 24v it has a seperate drive belt for the ac compressor if yours is the same set up?[obviously your engine is different] try removing this drive belt.if idle quality is bad drag on compressor is more than enough to stall engine as would turning steering etc.look for vac leaks inlet leaks egr operating at idle[this is very common transponder suffers from exhaust gases/carbon build up] idle valve gets choked with carbon too tps switch can also play up. all the above deteriorate your idle quality which is especially fragile from a cold start.
iv`e suffered with all of the above at some point so worth a look phil.

Thanks for your replys; it all seems to be pointing towards the A/C compressor. I’ll check it out as soon as I can and give you all my findings
