Hi guys Just reregistered after the problems in the states and wondered if the rack repair listed in http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/srackrepair.htm would rectify my problem with fluid leaking out of the gaiter ? It's got a bid bad now and I'm leaning towards buying a new/recon rack but was wondering is there any special bleeding procedure which ever way I go ? Regards Powelly 2.9 12v Ultima

I understand the best way of bleeding the power steering is to run the engine and turn the steering from lock to lock a couple of times on grass or similar is advisable to prevent to much strain, that should clear any air locks etc from the system and them top when its HOT not when its cold......

My understanding is that if the oil is leaking the oil seals have gone which are unavailable so you need to get a new or re-con rack! A new one from fordparts.co.uk is about £430 a recon between 180 - 230. The recons are not worth it in my opinion as I have just had to replace one that only lasted 14 months! I flushed the system before bleeding, and then bled it by turning the steering wheel lock to lock whilst the car was in the air and topping the oil up - then again when it was on the ground! Instead of grass you can also use old magazines! Another tip - when taking the rack out or replacing, jack the engine up a bit to give a bit more room1 (just be careful where you place the jack!) Hope this helps! Daven

Thanks daven, I've gone down the recon route cos funds only allow that direction !! I'm going to do it on a 4 poster ramp at the weekend, so hopefully all will go ok. Thanks again Powelly
