I think I might need a new fuel tank. (Car and garage stink of petrol after the take is filled right up.) Anyone got any advice on how easy a job it is to do? Is a second hand tank any good or should I pay big bucks for a new one? Are the tank sealing liquids any good for repairs? Any advice most welcome. Many thanks Mottsy

IMHO if you are going down the route of taking the tank out then it has to be worth the extra to put a brand new one in.. they are not that expensive and while it is out you can underseal the underside of the tank... It is possible to do this on ramps and ax;e stands but help is needed from another person....If I remeber correctly Bertie of newly married fame has done it quite recently (Changed the tank) and will offer guidance.

Changed the tank on my Granada, It's not that hard, but you may well have problems with the tank strap bolts, they are captive nuts and of course with all the rust and muck that gets chucked up, the minute you put force on them they break, so i ended up buying new tank straps and bolts too, as they aren't expensive. Cut through the straps, drop the tank, then deal with the nuts as you will have more room to work with the tank out. Hope this helps a bit. By the way think the new tank was £90 from Sereck, Ford wanted £200+Vat

An obvious point i know, but make sure the tank is empty when you remove it, just a small amount of petrol can slosh about and make it awkard. I should,nt really say this but in the past when i have done this i have found the lowest point on the tank (usually with the car raised at the rear) and punched a small hole in the one to be discarded. Then caught any remaining fuel in a bucket. I say that i should,nt say this because i know somone will tell me off because of the risk of sparks when punching a hole. So be carefull. regards, john.n
