2.5 tdi alternator problem

Can anyone help, I run a `94 (m)reg ultima 2.5 tdi VM engine. The problem is that the alternator is only lasting about a month ,if that long, before the bearings give up. I had to change the pulley a few months ago to a 5rib from a sierra,to run a narrower belt as ford couldn`t supply a new 7rib one Anyway the problem I`m having is with the bearings in the alternator, which is a standard 60 amp transit unit. It works well but keeps running the bearings. Has anyone had this problem before and if so how did you fix it Also would the larger unit from a late model transit work, mountings look the same, and it puts out about 100 amps,im told The car in question is a taxi and so does quite a milage. Any help or ideas would be appriciated Thanks Duke

Hi, I have recently changed my alternator but that's after five years, even the bearings on the reconditioned alternators should last 30,000 miles minimum. I think your problem is the wrong belt it's pulling the bearing off centre, I'm interested in that you cannot get a proper replacement, I'll try my contact and get back to you, in the mean time nice to hear from another 2.5 VM engine man. cheers Sam.

Hi Sam, Thanks for getting back to me. The problem isn`t with the belt,I can get that from Ford about £47 plus vat......I`ve got that. The problem was with the wide 7 rib pulley,it was worn and running off centre, thereby running the bearing out. The auto electrician says the problem is excess heat being built up in the bearing, melting the grease and then running the bearing dry. I dont think its because I`m working with a narrower belt, just ..a) a bad design by ford to start with....engineer`s words, and b) lack of cooling. Thanks for the idea anyway and if your mate or anyone has a good 7 rib pulley,I`d be interested Thanks Duke

Hello again Duke, yes I know that they are available from ford but have been looking to find a cheaper source from elsewhere, [let you know when I do] another problem that occures with the alternator is oil leaking into it though the vacuum pump [for the braking system] located on the rear shaft, mainly because the seal has not been correctly inserted when renavating the alternator. This problem can not be seen untill things are getting serious and the oil starts leaking out of the alternator. speak to you soon, Sam.

Hi, you are speaking about the gasket or seal between the alternator itself and the vacuum pump. Where can I buy it or speaking in other terms, is there a partnr. avaible? Thanks Volker

HI again sam Yes thanks I know about the seal.our local Ford dealer have them listed as service parts, approx £5.60 each, and they keep them in stock. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative belt to the ford one,the belt I`m using is a 5rib belt, for a merc. part no.202220580 ref00899787 92, drive belt 124 129 300E CE 24v, costing £14.16 trade. I know its a narrower belt, but it works on my taxi and has done since august with no problems. The main problem I still have is the rear alternator bearing getting so hot it dries out and packs up on a regular basis. Later cars had a larger 120amp unit fitted, which has a much larger bearing, and different vaccuum pump. Incidentally, forgot to tell you ,that belt was from "euro car parts", www.eurocarparts.com If you can`t get one,get back to me and I`ll sort one out.

Hi VOlka, The seal you want is an "O" ring seal which fits inside the vacuum pump, where it goes onto the alternator. It is available from ford as a service item. Its a vaccuum pump/alternator seal for the "92 on transit van. It`s exactly the same seal, and most ford dealers should carry it. Any other problems ....just ask Duke.

Hi - all the replies so far have suggested the oil issue could be the cause. I've replied on a few threads about bottom pulley and belt tensioner problems - it was these that b****red 2 alternators up on my motor. I've only tonight put my replies on these threads so maybe you'd like to read 'em! Could be the oil thing, could be the tensioner/pulley problem? Is your belt slapping at all? That's what did my alternators in....
