Weeping gearbox prop shaft seal

Hi all, while doing an engine oil change over the weekend, I noticed some gear box oil had started to weap from the prop shaft seal at the rear of the manual 5 speed box on my 2L Scorpio. I topped up the oil, it took about 1/4 of a pint of EP 80W/90. Can I change this seal without removing the gearbox from the car, or should I wait until I have to change a clutch? Thanks in advance for your advice... Kev.

Hi there. I have had a look at hte service manual with regarsd the MT 75 gear box and it does not look as though the changing of the rear prop shaft oil seal is a feasable option with the box in situ...... I will re read and advise further....It really does look like a big job....as I cannot find reference to it inparticular just in general documentation.. Others might know more. If you need the documentation to which I refer email me off site

Hi, Thanks for the advice, I have talked with a mechanic friend and he has advised same. He says that a lot of gear boxes weep slightly, but rarely loose more than a 1/4 pint of oil or so in a year, and most people will only top them up, but that I should keep an eye on it as if it did start to leek more, there would be a spattering of oil as it was flung from the prop shaft onto the exhaust pipe and under side of the car. Good luck, Kev.
