Shift Solenoid 3 Gearbox Fault (auto)

Hi,
Looking for some help. I have a 1995 2L auto, which appears to be having problems changing from 2nd to 3rd gears. Also, often when this happens, the overdrive light on the dash flashes. I have tried cleaning the MAF and have now tried disconnecting the MAF and the car seems to still have the same problem. I had it Crypton tuned a while ago, and the tuner told me the car had registered a P1761 shift solenoid 3 gearbox fault. All the symptoms your site suggests for a problem MAF, but now I have taken this out of the equation does this mean I need a complete gearbox overhaul or is there a simpler fix?
You mention that the solenoids can be changed externally and as the rest of my gearbox seems very good, is this a viable option? If so, how do I do this?
Thanks  Huh

Have you checked trasmission oil level? If not remember to check at working temperature, sit in the car with handbrake fully on and  shift select in all positions three times, leave the engine running  in safe mode then check dipstick it should read between the two marks while your at it, check the  condition of oil ie does it smell burnt and is it red to light brown in colour, please excuse if you have already done this and good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I had the sump removed flushed, and new oil in June this year, and it's still at the right level now.

Waders,
I've put the full workshop manual for the Scorpio auto boxes at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autotrans.htm - so this may help.

I would advise popping it into a good auto specialist and get a quote for the work. Some owners have had the solenoids replaced rather than the whole gearbox overhauled with good results - others have bitten the bullet and gone for a full overhaul.

Thanks Eric, I have studied the manual for the auto gearbox, and for the life of me cannot find a reference to changing a solenoid. I think I will take your recommendation and go to a gearbox specialist. Does the forum recommend anyone? I am in Barnet (Herts).
Thanks
Barry.

Hi,
Can anyone point me towards a "good" auto box spiecelist? In the greater london area is good, north london area even better!! I need a solenoid replacing (shift 3) and local auto shop will only do complete overhaul.  Angry    I'm told others have changed only solenoids with good results.  Grin
