;D   forum for the last six months since buying a '96 td ultima est.to use as a works 'knockabout'.
It's been a good ol'tool until the drive belt snapped last week.New one fitted(£40!)and a new tensioner(£90!)also.
Since then every time steering is on full lock(and sometimes just a turn when cold) the drive belt just stops dead and a smoke/spark thing happens from the bottom pulley.Fitted a re-con steering rack today(£150)in the belief that it was 'hydraulicing' the pas pump, nice try but no cigar.ANY IDEAS,ANYONE?

Does it have aircon, and is that working OK?

If it has but you are not getting cooling then it could be linked to the AC compressor. Surprisingly you can some times free that up again.

As you say Baz speak softly and carry a big stick, or a lump hammer if you have a Mark 1 Capri and the starter pinion sticks.. Grin

I had a similar problem, couldn't work out what it was until i went for the aircon gassing up. When i then turned the aircon on, smoke gusted from the bottom pully. Turned out the rubber damper on the bottom pulley hard come loose allowing the center part driven by the engine to spin almost freely inside the outer part!
Rather than pay £100 for a pulley (after this one fell to bits), I took it off and welded it solid then put it back on the motor. The tensioner was b****red too, I made one of those from some 1/4 inch plate without the spring loading mechanism. Works fine now...
Now, where can I find a new oil cooler.....

THANKS FOLKS!sure enough a close look revealed the Bottom Pulley wandering around in a random self destruct orbit.Ordered one up today as,whilst Pshyco's repair methods are where my heart lies,I do this for a living on 15 ltr V8 twin turbo diesels and just can't be a*s*d.Not looking forward to fitting it though:set aside 36 hours, stock up on plasters and buy a bigger swear jar or bosh ,bang, tickle then down the pub? Why can't I afford a new lexus van?
