i have an intermittemt prolem with my speedo/steering/cruise control. they all seem to be linked to the same problem as they all malfunction at the same time. the speedo suddenly drops to 0, the steering gets hard and the cruise control fails to operate. then within seconds/ minutes every thing is all fine again. i dont know if this is related but recently the gaerbox is behaving a bit eratic, also the overdrive light has been flashing now and again. i have cleaned the MAF but the problem is still there can anyone advise me please? p

Hi Blondy,
I'm no expert, but I'm sure I've read of similar problems within this site somewhere, and I'm sure it relates to the speed sensor (possibly on gearbox). The cruise control switching off is probably because it thinks your car is not going fast enough for it to be on. The bit I don't understand is how the power steering is affected, as I'm sure its pump is belt driven!?

Your other problems sounds definitely related to your MAF. Had similar problems myself, time to get your car plugged in!

Good Luck  Wink

thanks for that, i think the car has speed sensitive power steering so when the car is going fast it tells the steering to stiffen up and vice verse, (i think). correct me if i am wrong. thanks pj.

Blondy,
Yes, this will be the VSS. It sends a pulse signal proportionate to the speed of the output shaft on the gearbox. The signal is used by the instrument panel for the speedo, the EECV powertrain control module for engine and gearshift timing, (hence the OD light flashing) the cruise control module, the sensotronic steering and even the radio for the AVC.
If you have access to an OBD lead you'll find the P1502 DTC recorded.

Down on the nearside of the gearbox toward the rear you'll see a single bolt holding in the VSS with the wiring in a clip. Check the wiring and the connector and make sure they are not damaged first - if not then undo the bolt and withdraw the VSS, put in the new one.
