1994 cosworth estate suspension

Thanks to Darton on his diagnosis of a worn front anti roll bar drop link.

I will now enjoy a Knock free drive.

My next concern is to cure the boat like handling.

I hope that the car I have just purchased is well worn after its 10 years and that replacement shocks and probably springs will at least make it handle reasonable as it really is spongy at the moment and I fear that if I don't get it half decent I will have to search for another estate model.

Am I correct in saying that most scorpio Estates had the ride levelling rear suspension and certainly all the 24v cosworth's did?

A ride leveller system is controlled by the shock absorber which holds the vehicle weight as opposed to the spring with holds the car's weight on normal suspension.

The road spring therefore on a load leveller suspension is a much lighter tension and rate than normal as it doesn't need to be that strong its more of an auxiliary spring.

From my Reference books at Demon Tweeks : Koni, Bilstein, and KYB do not list a rear shock absorber to replace any worn ride leveller shocks because if they did you would also need to replace the spring with a much stronger tension. They don't manufacture springs and so this would be too much hassle for them, so hence they steer clear by not listing them.

But Koni, Bilstein, and KYB do list a rear Shock absorber for the non ride leveller Saloon (non 24v) which is also the same shock and part number from the old granada (1985 onwards). So it seems the rear suspension mountings and design top and bottom are the same on all Granada's at the rear from 1985.

Has anyone replaced the rear ride levellers with conventional shocks and conventional springs ?

Can anyone forsee any problems if I go this route and effectively put new saloon rear shocks and new heavy duty rear coil springs on the rear of my cosworth estate ?

regards
Roger.

hi there

your car should have the earlier suspension which is 'pumped' up with small air compressor. have you checked it's working? later cars had hydropneumatics self-pumping shockers. my car handles all right for a big estate car, so it could be just down to worn parts. see....

To scorpio_man.

Thanks for your reply, the pump up air compressor theory sounds interesting !

Where exactly is it on the car ?

And are there any other significant signs to look for ?

And besides any ideas on wether fitting conventional saloon shocks and springs will fit ?

regards
Roger
