Engine idle

Can anyone give suggestions for a cure please?
My Scorpio has developed a very fast tick-over speed which is binding the automatic clutch immediately. The idle speed does not reduce when the engine has warmed up.
I would describe it in terme of 30 years ago as if the throttle cable was stuck or the choke was jammed open but a local Ford garage has said the problem is not mechanical but electronic and i will need to spend megabucks to trace it and then fix it. The car, frankly isnt worth megabucks any more - but I like it.

What Engine do you have??
Try cleaning the idle control valve (ICV)
Information is on the site on how to do it Quite an easy job on the 24V to be honnest.
Also try the MAF meter, it may also require cleaning.

Yes, which engine is it like Alan says.
Also, if your Scorp is OBD-2 equipped then where are you - there might be a member nearby with lead and laptop who can do a scan for you.

Thanks to the guys who got in touch. My apologies for not telling you the engine!! Car is Scorpio Ultima auto 2.3. "R" regd.
Any help will go a long way. if only things were as simple as pushrods and cables... no electronics.
PS my other car is a 2CV!!
