Cosworth 24V Problem 3 - alternator red light

OK..last problem (for now).I get the alternator red light on at intermitent times. There seems to be no pattern or logic to this. It may only be at night, because its either not on during the day or not bright enough to grab my attention. The red light will only come on fro a miniute or two, then go off, and going off does not relate to anything I do, revs speed etc. It just has a mind of it's own. Nor is to do with any road bumps (loose connections etc). The battery is new...the alternator as been reconditioned.  still got the red light. Not a major problem, because its not on long enough to cause a flat battery, but rather annoyting? Suggestions? Ideas?  Thanks....end of problems for now Smiley I posted all 3 problems seperately, because its easy to get responses this way.  Dave  PS Where's Eric when I need an OBD2 reading?  Smiley

Is it really bright ... Same as when you first switch on the ignition or is it slightly dimmed?

If thats the case then that would suggest a diode fault rather than anything else.... Coming and going is usually a case of the battery rewquiring charge and the light does not show ... as soon as it becomes fully charged then the red light will glow... and that again indicates a doider fault in the rectifier circuit on the back of the alternator......

Hi thanks for that. I just rechecked to see how bright the battery light is with ignition on only. I would say when the fault appears the light is about half brigtness...but seems always to be the same brightness when the fault it on.  The alternator has been removed and reconditioned 2 weeks ago to try and fix this fault..new regulator, rectifier, brushes..whatever they do when they recondition them etc.

If its as you state about half brightness when the engines is running that would suggest to me a rectifier fault.... I would have it rechecked for faults ... surely it has some sort of warranty .. but its difficult to say exactly without seeing it...

Others might haven their own ideas
