Hi guys,
I have tried to fix a steering wheel shudder in the car for 6 months now to no avail. A replacement steering rack has just expired and all power steering fluid has leaked. Therefore, I'm peeved off big time and have decided to put the car up for sale (for a nominal sum) unless someone suggests otherwise.
The car would be good as a doner car or for repair.
I'm in Chiswick, London. Would like someone to collect the car (not drivable without topping up the fluid constantly - not advised) and pay me something (small) in return.
Here's the spec: M Reg 1995
2.0l Ultima Auto with all the usual gadgets incl. leather, 6 CD etc.
Tourmallard Green, 110k
MOT'd til October 2005
Taxed til Oct 05 but I'll be taking that off
Owned by me since Jan 04, owned by my boss since 1998 although no service history. Have valid v5 document and trust the mileage.
The steering is the only problem I've had with this great cruiser.
Good Never had another problem with the car, a/c is ice cold, all electrics work, cruise works, auto box fine etc. etc. Got auot box cooling pipes done only in March as a precaution.
Bad
Body - lots of dents and scrapes on bumpers and panels
Tyres - not great all round
Steering - the main problem as above
Trip Computer - the buttons have fell behind the dash although it works
Engine - has an audible ticking noise

Hello Gainef,
I am not a car expert (yet). But I was able to chnage the power steering rack myself with some help of "Snoopy" and " Snuggles" and others here in this group.
I hope the replacement rack from autospares.group will serve me for same time, despite the bad packing of it and the dammages resulting from this neglegience by autospares.group
Anyway, the operation to fix a power steering rack is not to difficult and you should give it a try.
Beside transportation costs, the value of the reparation was about
100 Pounds.
Now I have a question to all of the group: How good are "refitted" racks.? Can they
be compared to new ones?

Since I am living in France ( near Bordeaux) I can only help by finger crossing and good wishes.
To take out the rack. Its really a strait forward operation. The only difficulty for me was to find the tool used to separate the track rod ends from the spindle carrier.

Hello,
This is maybe too simple, but has happened to me several times: Have you checkked the roundness of the tyres? Have You checked that your wheels are sitting nicely in the wheel hubs. (in some models there is locking washer, and all wheels do not have a space for it)

A leaking rack has nothing to do with roundness of tyres.

You are right, the leak is not from tires.
