Seasonal Greetings and sometime blues

Hi everyone may i first extend the seasonal greeting to you all and hope that you have a very merry xmas this year. Going to be my first xmas not working for several years and boy am i looking forward to it. Driving up to London for the weekend next week and wondered if the good people on here could help me with an ongoing problem. Have a 2.3 ultima saloon and its running lovely only problem i have is a vibration as soon as i tip the 70 mph mark it comes through the floor and steering wheel and has got slightly worse of late. Now i changed a front bearing a while ago and a few days ago replaced both tie rods ( this did cure the thump i was hearing on rough surfaces and one of the old ones fell apart when taken off) but sadly there still remains this vibration it spoils what i consider a premier ride in a wonderful car and i am hoping with you guys on here i can get it sorted by next week end. So any ideas? similar experiences? would be very grateful for all advice or suggestions many thanks ant

yes it is an auto but its not the cattle grid effect, i can feel that effect some times and its no problem this is a more pronounced vibration starts to be noticed at around 68 mph and gets worse above 70 the car is ok to drive but is just uncomfortable with this going on. cheers ant

could well be a wheel balance problem or even a wheel out of true .. worth getting them checked, If its not that then check the prop shaft couplings they can break up..... but the speed angle seems to indicate wheel balance etc... Others might have other ideas!

OK still not sure what this vibration is so tommorrow its war and i won't come out of the trenches till its over. anyone comment on my thought process so far? New front bearings and tie rods everything seems ok no extra play in anything no stearing wander and the stearing is not vague. Vibration is coming through the floor and yes it is felt through the stearing but not as much as the floor or foot area. The vibrations occur whilst on the Motor Way and around cruising speed 65 to 75 its seems worse under load and reduces under no load(ie foot off accelerator) So it has to be either the back wheels or the drive shaft bush? So I know how to check the back wheels but anyone know how to check the drive shaft bush whilst its on the vehicle? I need the car for Saturday or i will be forced to drive the wifes KA to london and back any suggestions are appreciated ant

Sounds very like the cattle grid effect.... ? Dunno... but I had this once or twice during the year but it seems to have gone now.. Check out the main site as it has a full page on this. regards George

Welshie, If you're sure the wheels are balanced, and the vibration is definitely coming up thorugh the floor of the car I would suspect the front propshaft centre-bearing. If this wears it allows the prop to oscillate instead of running centralised and this causes the low vibration at about the speeds you mention. Get underneath (using axle stands or wheel ramps) and you'll find a large bearing on the propshaft just back from the autobox. Grasp the shaft and try to pull it out of line. If it moves along the shaft axis then the centre bearing is shot. Check out http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/propshaft.htm BTW, if you remove the prop shaft rear flange bolts to the diff you MUST MUST MUST mark each bolt to each hole in the prop and flange so they go back in exactly the same place - they are balanced bolts. HTH

Eric's right. Also check out the do-nut on the prop. (big rubber ring) for splits this too can cause vibration, again do as Eric points out in order to maintain the balancing. These rings are available if not through Ford an independent Auto Specialist and through them are not too expensive.

ok so now i feel a little embarrassed and a prat but should act as warning to all. After checking the rear wheel and associated bits, I then moved on to the other side after jacking it up I grabbed the wheel to give it a good shake when a sudden pain in my paw stopped me dead, after clos inspection the tyre had the steel banding coming through. which i had not noticed. Its severely worn in the shoulder of the tyre. I am agast at myself for not noticing it before but the tyre from nearly every angle seems perfect when the wheel came of the wear is a narrow band just on the shoulder of the trye, worn through the steel banding in several places well i went straight away and got two new tyres for the back and hey presto the vibration has gone, Now it only leaves me the job of finding out why this has happend but i do appreciate everyones reply many thanks ant

Bearing, Bushes. Not a lot to go wrong back there. Now you won't hurt your self holding the wheel, I'd jack it up again and have a pull/push at the back again, both sides!! Didn't your tyre fitter check for play
