Car - M reg, Scorpio 2.5TD Ultima

After several years of annoying electrical glitches, I am left with a car with no aircon and non-working front electric windows.  I've not had aircon or front windows for well over a year!

Anyway, on my way to Leeds early this morning, I stopped at a garage in Hereford, filled up the car with diesel, paid, came back out to the car to see that both front windows had wound down by two inches. WTF!!  Tried using the controls to wind them back up, but as they hadn't worked for over a year, I wasn't hopeful.  No, they didn't work, so I spent the rest of my journey freezing my n*ts off, even with my dog's blanket off the back seat wrapped around me.  (Did anyone see this funny site on the M5, M42 or M1 today??).  Since my aircon wasn't working, the car only got moderately warm once I got to 85mph+ (sorry officer!)

So what's the point of this tale?  Well, got back tonight (after a stop-off at BHS to buy a cheap fleece and hat to keep me warm) and started to look at the central and aux fuse boxes.  Previously, I'd tried cleaning them with WD40 and removing and reinserting the fuses and relays.  Didn't fix the problem, but, hey, we all like the smell of WD.

I'd just been redoing the electrics in my old cottage, and had purchased some DeoxIT Dn5 Power Booster contact cleaner from RussAndrews.com.  I was using this for all the mains connections to my hifi.  So I thought I'd give this spray a try rather than the usual WD40.

After removing, cleaning and reinserting all the fuses and relays in both fuse boxes, miracle of miracles, everything started to work again.  The electric windows now worked, allowing me to finally close the windows, the aircon came on and worked beautifully and the electric adjustable front seat now worked again.  Basically, everything electrical in the car is now working perfectly.  Neighbours must have wondered what was going on when I "whooped" with joy in the car outside the house!

So for all of you out there with electrical gremlins, give this a try.  It worked for me and I'm now over the moon.  No need to buy a new fusebox, so I've saved myself considerable money.

If you try it, let me know what you think.

Regards,
Pooley.

Pooley,

does your car have all the covers in place along with the battery cover or has it ever been without? It could be that is the original problem!

Hi Baz,

Yeah, when I bought the car it had no battery cover.  So it was the first thing I ordered when I took it for its first service (after reading the frontpage of this website!).

Glitches occurred even after the cover was fitted, so I think the damage had already been done.  However, after treating the fuse box with DeoxIT, it seems to have fixed all the problems.  So far anyway.  I'll monitor and report back if the situation changes.

It's just so nice to have the aircon back.

Nice to hear you sorted it out polley, I have a gremlin with the clocks dancing about everytime I start the car up when cold  does not happen when at normal temp so your Idea may help me, I also had the batt/cover missing when I bought the car so the fault may be connected can you confirm did you just spray the whole boxes once the fuses / relays removed or was you liberal with the spray ?

Thanks Steve........p s  did you order the Deoxit from the net ?

Getting the battery cover sorted is a good move for a start, but the dancing needles is definitely due to a discharged battery. It either wants charging or replacing.
