So i cleaned the MAF according to the instructions on this site and...
 
Putted it back together, gave the terminals a little spray with WD and off i went.
 
tick over terrible for starters.  the throttle response was bad and i got 2 miles on a test when the whole car DIED.
 
So i didn't know what to do and called the AA, they arrived 15mins later and took a look...
 
They told me the MAF had screwed.  Seems the Carb Cleaner had got into the units electrics.
 
He left it unplugged and off i went in Limp Home Mode.
 
So after i've given the unit a nice wa5rm dry out for 4 hours it's still the same.
 
So i followed the advice and broken up my MAF Huh??

Are you sure you sprayed the carb cleaner in the right places?
You should have only been cleaning those 2 sensor bits (which are very delicate don't forget).
If they are ok, did it definitely all get put back together properly? Is the wiring connector back in place securely?

Yes only sprayed them 'prongs' within the tube.  
 
Got 'em nice and clean pretty much straight away as well.  Obviously there is away for surplus spray that hasn't evaporated to find it's way into the electrics.
 
Connector is fine as well.  I'm going to open ouit the MAF unit it's self and see what damage is in there.
 
Oh well.  Supopose it's another bill that i'll need to fork out on.  And i donated £5 to the site that told me to do it as well.

Does the AA now carry the equipment to test your MAF Huh
Hmmm, you must have damaged the hot wire/resistor some how Shocked. Carb cleaner in the electrics part would do no harm!  
Thousands have cleaned ther MAF's Roll Eyes with no problems.
Maybe it was about to die anyhow Shocked
What engine you got Dan?

It's the 24v 2.9 bud.  Showing 67K miles.
 
He didn't have the test equiptment bud, but with the unit plugged in the engine is terrible and as soon as you touch the throttle it dies.
 
Unplugged it's OK - but obviously not 100%

I'd still have a check on the connection in the day light tomorrow though, this is after all the only bit that has been disturbed Roll Eyes.  
 
Maybe you could post to see if there's another member near you who would be willing to let you try his (or Hers) on your car Wink  
I think a new MAF is over £100 Shocked

Well, with all these MAFs being cleaned all over the place I suppose one had to go kaput. The whole point about using carb cleaner is that it can do no harm - but if the MAF was already on the way out you might just have tipped it over. We can't check the Long Term Fuel Trims now, but these would have confirmed that the MAF was bad before you touched it  Wink
 
One other point - did the AA man check the little loom containing the wire from the MAF as it passes over the radiator? Some cars have had wiring damaged there and the PCM doesn't react well to a scrambled signal on the MAF pins. Take the connector off the MAF and open up the insulation on this loom to make sure there's no damage to the insulation on the wires, then wrap it up again with insulating tape or self-amalgamating tape.
 
If you're sure there's nothing wrong with the wire then source a new MAF - but take advantage of a good discount by trying http://www.fordpartsuk.com/ first.

Yeah i've had it out mate and it seems to be OK.
 
I'll collect on a new one (mate says his breaker-buddy should have one lying around he can ermmm 'borrow').
 
Proberly my fault you know.  Suppose loosening the debris with a hammer and chisel didn't help either LOL  - Only joking.
 
IMO it's better it failing now under a minor bit of maintenace than when i really don't need want it to.
 
tell you what though.  That carb cleaner got my hands nice and clean.
 
Why did my airbox have so much engine oil in it Huh??  Over fill ??

Thanks Eric mate i'll try that link for future stuff.  I didn't think the spray would hurt it tbh..  i was just stuck for any other answer as it couldn't possible have been anything I DID  LOLOL
 
the most important think at the moment is the auto box being inspected on Monday morning  Shocked  Now a 6 second drive selection and kick down times all over the place and unpredictable don't sound too clever to me !!!!

The oil in your air box is probably from oil vapour condensing from the engine breather.
 
Strange behaviour of the gear box could be your MAF,  Roll Eyesreally Roll Eyes
Maybe you'll find a new(ish) MAF was needed Shocked

Yeah that'll be nice if it was.  So armed with a substitute MAF unit and a Auto Specialist (Oakdean in Nottm) i'll report all the findings on Monday  Cheesy Cheesy

I wonder what  was used  to determine gear changes  on  auto boxes in the good old bad old days  before  electronics  and   engine  management  systems   made home  tinkering   obsolete?

Is your crankcase breather filter intact? It's a foam pad at the top left of the air box. When they fall apart you end up with oil everywhere - airbox, filter, MAF etc. Costs less than £1 and is now something I will do every year along with the air filter.

Well the foam filter is broken in that there's only about 20% of it left.  This may be half the reason the air filter was so rotten that upon removing the filter is half disintegrated leaving me to degrease and clean/hoover out the box !!!
 
this car has been neglected as the oil was thilfy black with little lubricating properties, the coolant was coloured but extremely low antifreeze content.. etc
 
Starting to think i've bought a clocked repped out lemon.

Hi Dan,
 
Probably not clocked, just neglected. Lots of people buy expensive motors and then expect to keep them at no more cost. If all is working as it should, do a proper full service yourself and all should carry on working as it should for miles and miles (well, till you next service it anyway).

the gearbox is the hinge point.  If that is Ok then i know the rest of the car is good.  Engine seems machanically sound.
 
I managed to get a full service in today (That's where i was going when the car cut out) £130 for the full jobbie including auxilary belt, usual other stuff and 5/15 semi synthetic upgrade at www.f1autocentres.co.uk.
