Washer jet weirdness...

Yesterday my washers packed up - all four jets got weaker and weaker until nothing came out. I assumed that the warning light or sensor had failed and that I had run out of screen wash Sad. So I bought screen wash at a petrol station and filled up the washer reservoir - it obviously wasn't empty. That didn't help, still no water and the pump could be heard so I assumed the pipes were blocked.

Just tried it and it now works fine  Undecided

Any ideas anyone? My list includes:

1. Failing pump
2. Temporary blockage (how Huh)
3. Air lock (again, howHuh)

It was about 10oC yesteday so it wasn't a temporary freeze (and there's plenty of screen wash fluid in anyway).

Me thinks you might have suffered a tempoary blockage or partial blockage.. There might just be a small amount of rubbish in the wash bottle and it got sucked over the end or the non return valve had stuck somehow.. its all ok now then leave it alone.. Investigate more if it happens again....

If someone has used washing up liquid in the washer bottle in the past this can cause terrible problems as it forms a thick string like substance..... which eventually blocks the pipes and jets   ....

Hi Dave,
Had a similar thing with mine a while back, turned out to be a blockage in the pipe where it runs by the bonnet hinge. It must of kept running the "bits" back down the pipe again when standing, as they would work 1st time then slowed real quick as it all cought up again. The pipe was being slightly kinked with the bonnet down, but not a lot!!

Well I had one not working on the passenger side (the far outside one), although it kind of fixed itself, albeit with a weak trickle.

Anyhow, that was yesterday. But today, the inner one on the passenger side is weaker. They are all working though. Just not 100%.

When I get bored, I might take the jet mount off and have a proper look.

Paul,
You may get away with using a pin to unclog the jet holes as probably a localised blockage as one slowed first. It takes seconds to try!!

Craig,
My old Exec did that!!

After trying to flush the hoses for a good time I got a friend to opperate the washers and I gave the stuck one a gentle pull, lo and behold it worked fine again after this. My conclusion; bit of grit or such made it stick!!

Try first, not last like me Embarassed

Thanks for the input chaps. Will have a look at the pipes but I must admit - monitoring it for a while looks favourite.

It's guaranteed to stop working on long run when the roads are annoyingly damp and covered in salt and other muck I guess!

Get a bike pump and strap it to the end of any pipes and pump. Pushes any crap out easily!! (Used to have to do it a lot on my old Corsair)

Had the same problem with the washer jets on my Granada a while ago, as Snoopy has said, someone had put washing up liquid in the screenwash tank, and when mixed with proper screenwash it makes that slimmey string stuff.  It had clogged up the filter on the end of the pump,  five minute job to fix, take out the pump, take off the rubber filter and wash it thoughly in warm water, also a good idea to flush the tank while your at it. I had similar problems on my cossie, I removed pump (which just clips in under O/S front bumper area), no water coming from bottle, I thought it was strange as hole for pump in bottle is 1/2" dia., so stuck small screwdriver in hole and result was one very wet sleeve and water pouring out, replaced pump and everthing was fine.
