hello all! great website looking for some advice. just purchased 2.3 ghia estate p(97) couple of problems that i have noticed noisy engine (tapping) and hot starting problems. i have been told that noise could possibly be the tappets if so, what price for curing. no idea on start problems any advice on both would be greatly appreciated. thanks helen

The tappets are hydraulic (governed by oil pressure) so adjustment is automatic. You can try flushing the engine a couple of times to try and clear out any oilways that 'may' be restricted slightly and using a really good oil afterwards - I'd suggest Mobil 1 but there are others. This may or may not cure the problem but is probably worth trying. Hot starting problems read this - http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelreg.htm

hi and welcome re the engine. that's not right. the 2.3 is the pick of the bunch, imo. there shouldn't be any tapping noise at all. i'd give it a full service asap with the correct grade of oil (sae 5w-30) and a ford oil filter (it has a one way valve in it). see how that goes. what's the milage? could also be the cat. it's quite high up on the 2.3, so could sound like the noise is coming from the engine. re hot starting. have a read of http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelreg.htm it would make things easier if you could get the car checked for any error codes. that might pin point the problem. post your location. someone might have a lead near to you. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/homediag.htm

On an engine of that age.. Tapping when first starting is tolerable if you are still using the recommended oil. If you move to a thicker oil (for high mileage engines) you may reduce the noise.
