No tailgate unlock by key

Being one of a very few in Denmark driving new style Scorpio (1997 Ghia estate) for about 3 months now, I hope for some help in this forum as no one really knows anything about my car around these parts of Europe complemented by the absence of Haynes stuff. Obviously I will do my very best to pay back with experiences in due time...

My problem is that my tailgate lock seems to have stuck leaving only the remote control able to unlock it.

Inserting and turning the key in locked tailgate gives absolutely no response, as well as pushing the lock button on unlocked car will not open the tailgate (I don't know if these problems are connected, but the pushing of the button has never been functional in contrast to the key unlocking, which started to fail for a couple of weeks ago).

I believe that the problem is of a mechanical nature and I have tried to search the forum, but with no luck.

Anyone ?

Hi There and WELCOME.. What I think you need to do is make a physical inspection of the lock and ithe associated parts which are easily viewed under the cover which is held in place by some screws and plastic clips..... it may just be loose ... If you need further instructions then please email of site and will try to help.....

It does sound mechanical, if giving it a jiggle and lubrication doesn't sort it then i'd go for a new boot lock mechanism, which is included in a normal full lockset priced at around £68 including VAT, don't know how many Krones that is, but the point is the mechanism by itself should be very cheap indeed, and not too hard to fit at all. There is documentation of that in the forum in a locks thread!

Ben and I have just finished doing the entire lockset and PATS programming.. phew.

And not forgetting that there were various options for boot locking,or at least there appears to be.

Unlocking by pressing the 'key button'=optional
(mine does not,and I cant see how it could)

As far as I can remember ALL should be unlockable via the key (engine on OR off)

Unlocking via the remote whilst engine running=optional?

When I had a problem with a door lock, I found that pushing the key hard into the lock whilst turning did the trick.

Hi there ,

The tailgate lock on my '95 Estate only works by remote control if the ignition is off or 5 seconds after the engine is turned off . The key locks and unlocks as normal but the push button does nothing . I have been told this is an anti - mugging type feature to stop someone opening the boot when you are stopped in traffic .

Regards , Madd .

Mine only unlocks using the RED master key ...

The remote works ok , but only after I took it all apart and cleaned the contacts.

Yes , only had the car a few months.

we all done postings on the door locks before. I called then a load of rubbish on such an expensive car.
You can exspect them to jam up from 50,000 miles needing replacements.
Normally its the drivers door then the rear door then the passenger door. inbetween this exspect the ignition lock to go as well.
I aways found that spraying WD or something does not work, but worth a try.
But what Eddie say's about pushing in the key hard and wagging it around sometime will get you out of trouble.
But you still need to replace the lock as fast as you can.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
On all my cars you can't unlock the back door with the engine running, you have to turn the engine off.

The boot can be double locked, and if it is then  you can't open it with the engine running, in fact it can only be opened with the remote or with a key. I think. And to undo the double locking you need to unlock it all the way with a key. I think. Haven't really tried it very much.

Best way to avoid lock problems = always use the fob to enter and exit, and just be gentle with the ignition!

You're right, John, these locks are so disappointing. Makes me wonder though. I've a friend who's owned a succession of high mileage Fiestas with the same locks and they've never gone wrong. Hm.

Yes Dave, my transit vans did round the clock mileage and never had a lock seige up.
Do you think Ford was having a laugh at us all when they asked for a little under £30,000 for one of these cars.
When my igition lock jammed up solid, the AA patrol man told me it was the tumblers inside that wear. then slip out of place.
But I read somewhere you should not lubicate the inside of locks as it attachs dirt.
O well I give up. just have to replace the locks as they go.
I still got that to do on the 1998 cosworth i got last june,  only done 60,000 miles and already the drivers and rear tail gate locks jammed. the passenger door still works but if you just rely on going to that side to unlock the door that will go and you are locked out.
Still at least the fob works real good on this car. and that idea about using the fob as much as you can is good. it will safe wearing out the locks but what a thing to have to do.

You should use graphite to lubricate locks you should be able tobuy some from a locksmiths shop or failing that use some fine sandpaper and a pencil to get the graphite.

GRAPHITE! I am sure I bought a tube in Halfords a few years ago. The tube was of a stiff type plastic and a sharp squeeze would result in a spray of graphite powder coming out of the nozzle.

I bought it to deal with a very obstinate locking fuel cap on my old Granada.
