Temperature Gauge

Hi I know there have been previous posts on this subject but the penny is not dropping I think it may be an age thing.
Symptons are, that the temp gauge pointer from time to time fails to register or at best rises just a little I don,t think this is having an effect on heating efficiency but with this mild weather I cannot be certain as most of my runs are shortish but there were no problems at all until just recently, can any of you guys suggest how to trace and rectify this problem.

if u only o short runs why dont u leave it ticking over for say 10/15 mins and see where the gauge gets and see how hot the air is from the heater?

The temperature gauge not registering is a common occurrence.. Check the connection to the sensor first and then if all else fails do a short out test to see if the gauge is reading full scale... and if that fails then replace themostat and or have a look at the fix on the main site ....http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolanttempgauge.htm

Quite interested in this post as my recently purchased 2.5 diesel temp gauge sits permanently in the "blue" area, very occasionally moving a couple of mm to the top of the blue and then back (or am I imagining it?).
Despite this the heater blows out warm after a mile or two, although the water level light goes on and off intermittently despite being above the min level in the header tank. I'm just waiting for it to overheat!?
I'll be checking the gauge in mine followed by the thermostat but other suggestions would be welcomed.

Paul On your 2.5 Td the coolant light going on and off would seem to indicate that the level sender may be faulty..(If it has one) . They are replaceable as far as I know but the later Scorpios did NOT have a collant level sender....as far as I remember.
But the temperature not moving out of the blue zone would indicate a faulty thermostat.. well worth checking it and replacing with a new one ....
Just out of interest do you have to add water/coolant to the systyem on a regular basis?... If not then the system would appear to be OK... If you are adding coolant then there has to be a problem and the casue has to be found..

Cheers for that.
I am currently establishing if the thermostat is working.
I have lost very minimal amounts of coolant and only after hard work, it seems to escape from the weakest point in the system.....so once I have swapped the thermostat I shall see if that has helped.
And it seems that the o/s cooling fan comes on as soon as the accelerator pedal is pressed, I'm sure this is definitely a case of a temporary repair by previous owner.....I'll keep you posted.

you know how the temp gauge don't go above the blue section on the gauge.
Well I going to try a new thermosat soon as i get one. (but I presume you all know how you can put your old one in a pan of water on the cooker and heat up the water and watch to see the old one open or not).
But that's not what I'm on about.
Today I did the old trick of raising the bonnet and putting a sheet of cardboard in front of the raditior. i did it all the way across and three-quarters up from the bottom.
Guess what? I did a run of 24 miles on the A46 and the gauge came up to midway. just like it should and stayed there. I let it tick over a bit when I got home and it stayed there, no time time it try and rise above.
But for the sake of what little it takes i will be looking to see if there is a therosat there

Problem solved, the thermostat was fine, so checked out the temperature sender thingy me bob, replaced that and hey presto all ok. Now just need to put the thermostat back in place or my fuel consumption will take a dive in this weather.
