My CATS Nearly Dead

Drivers side cat has got the "Death Rattle" on my 1997 24v Estate.
Has anybody removed both cats and knocked the core out and then fitted both back in place with no internals.
Was there any problems with the fueling??
Did you manage to knock all the core out??
I reckon a long drill bit in my hammer drill should make short work of them.
Last week end it was the Heater Matrix. Now the cats. Not much else left to replace!!
Owning a Scorpio is a bit like "The Never Ending Story"
Would appreciate your comments on the Cats..

Are you sure its the cat? There is a support bracket that tends to rattle when it gets rusty under there.

Once the cats are off might as well get a pipe bender to fabricate some downpipes. Eliminates all the problems of not getting all the ceramic out and having it block the later boxes. Remember, if you do this your friendly MOT bloke will always be thirsty  Wink  Enjoy the extra power as well  Grin

Thanks for getting back to me guys.

To Grant.  All the support brackets are ok. I installed new support brackets at the rear of the cats and replaced new bolts and studs to manifold and front brackets about three months ago when I replaced the timing chains and rebuilt both cylinder heads.

To Eddie.  Do not have have a problem with the MOT Man. (He drinks like a fish)
I was going to knock the core out as a stop gap to making up some front pipes. in the next few weeks..
I will remove both cats from the car before I try removing the cores.
Do you know if the cores are bonded in place or not??

Hi Guys.
Removed both Cats.
Found right hand core had started to brake up and all the high temp lagging was missing hence the death rattle.
The left hand cat was loose and would probably go the same way as the right one.
They were easy to remove with cat in the vice, hammer and large screwdriver used to break up the core and vacuum cleaner sucking out the dust. Use a mask and safety goggles if you do it..
Replaced both cats back on the car, and the car goes well but the exhaust noise from the now empty Cat Cans is similar to a Fiat 500 on steroids at 7000rpm.
I think I will loose the will to drive it if I dont replace the cats.. Must be getting old!!
