Weak, wet horns!!

I had occasion today to blast the horns at a driver who came at me from the left when I was already on the roundabout, Cossie power got me out of it but my blast on the horns was more of a quiet "parrp" Not what I would expect from a car of this ilk.

Has every Scorp got these willy wet horns or is it just me?

Anyone know of any upgrade I can do to the horns? I have a set of triple air horns in my shed from ages ago that still work but I don't know the legality of fitting them to my 98 Scorp. The air horns don't play a tune but all just blast together.

It's always worth   checking your horn's  effectiveness  at  pedestrian crossings, ( little old ladies give  the  best  reactions ) , just as they're  passing  in front of your car  give a 5 sec.  blast and see how  high they jump.

Should be twin horns, drivers side rear/bottom of radiator. Very effective too.

Check the feed and earth connections-disconnect clean with emeery cloth etc. and replace.

You can fit your air horns to your car they are perfectly legal to sound as one note not several  as in the police/Fire/ Ambulance dih-dar horns  there is no legal requirement as to noise they make or db rating.. just the hours it can be sounded.

So would I be correct in presuming that a two tone horn would be illegal, not that I would have any inclination to pursue such ilegal activities such as this

As snoopy said, you can have 10 horns as long as they all sound at the same time.
Obviously twin horns would be 2 different tones, high and low both going off at the same time.
It would be good fun if the tones were adjustable, you could then tune them to generate a beat frequency........... Grin

there as already been postings on the weakness of horns.
On the four cars that I have, all the horns had different degrees of power, dispite them all being the same.
I did not think about what Eddie said about cleaning the connections.
Any way I changed to those electronic stat horns you can get off Ebay for about £10. They are strident and so small so they fit straight on.
Air horns are OK. but there is an opinion that the police will put you over if they are hear those 5 horns of the like that play a tune.
But I don't belive that they are not legal. I just think that it is a grey area that needs sorting.
Because of this some people have both sets of horns on a two way switch.

Yeah, my air horns are three horns of varying length. They all connect to one tube through a three way connector down to one output on the compressor therefore they all blow at the same time.

In the seventies/early eighties I had a five tone set that played Colonel Bogie just like the General Lee, the difference with them was that the compressor had 5 outputs and the horns connected each to a separate output and you had to get them on the right one or the tune was "dodgy" Grin

It seems from looking about that it is right that you can have as many horns as you like as long as they all play at the same time.
Musical air horns are only street legal if fitted to a vehilce registered before 1975 (this is as quoted by a few people on a newsgroup and I have not been able to verify the year anywhere)

Hi George, just reading your post re. the horn on your cossie. The reason it sounds a bit quiet is because only one of them is connected. When i had the car i had the same problem, looked underneath the drivers side bumper and saw 1 wire off. I reconnected it and it blew the fuse, and again twice more. I thought there must be a trapped wire or something so just left it off. Regards, john.n

Cheers John... nice to know the history of the car.. usually you never know what happened before..
This weekend I am going to fit a triple air horn system.... nobody will now miss me coming at them.... Grin
Thanks for the info... I'll have a better look at it.

Gonna just bypass the main power to the horns and route it through a relay which supplies battery power to the compressor..... loud as flippin heck...

Hi eddie,
The point of multiple horns as sold is that the horn lengths (and hence pitch) ARE tuned to beat and present a 'better' blare! Grin
