Drove home from the garage yesterday after having some repairs done, went out this morning to start her up and NOTHING, tried jump leads, still NOTHING, all the lights, wipers, windows and dashboard lights all working, but the engine does not turn over, there is no noises what so ever coming from the engine.  Any ideas Sad Sad

Firstly what repairs had been done?

It sounds like the starter motor power feed or activation circuit has been affected.

If the PATS had engaged you would be able to turn over the engine but it would not start. You say it does not even turn over.

A new solenoid fitted in the gearbox was the repairs.
The car does not click when ignition is turned on, there is no noises at all, but the dash illuminates and all the lights, wipers, electric windows all work !!!!

Have a quick gander at what the PATS light is doing on top of the dashboard and have a look at this page:

If nothing else it will rule it out.

Back again, Just been to the car, and the LED is flashing on the dashboard, I put the key in the ignition and the LED stayed on for about 2 seconds then went off.

Hi Ron,

worth a go anyway. Is the car automatic? Is it in Park properly? Would it click if it weren't - I am not sure? Have you tried starting it in Neutral?

Another thing - may not apply at all, do you have a separate alarm? We had an alarm and it went a bit funny and did exactly this.

Cheers

Hi ya Dave,
This one's got me well and truly puzzled, I did try it in neutral, but nothing.  It is a 2.0 16v Auto.

hello Ron ... as Tony says it's pretty certain to be the starter connections and not PATS ..was the gearbox taken out ? a solenoid can be replaced externally but others necessitate gearbox removal ? if so then the wiring clip at the gearbox is quite tricky and may well have been damaged or just pushed on without it's clip in place .. the starter circuit goes through it to enable the starter inhibitor .. will you try yourself or do you get a mechanic ? ..the wiring connection really needs a ramp if possible although you can check at the starter motor with a test lamp yourself with someone trying to crank while you test in park .. < with normal safety procedures > ... cheers  ... STN

ps. other things to check are the thinner red leads at the battery for security .. don't just waggle ..undo and re-tighten ..and if you are certain there is a relay " click " missing then the black ignition control relay in the fuse box ..
