No fuel to the injector pump on 2.5 TD

Having just fixed one problem im now experience another. When the car is cranked over first thing it doesn't start. Have replaced the glow plugs and even bypassed the PATS system by running a live power supply direct to the fuel pump there is still no fuel coming to the pump, yet once the car is started by putting diesel straight into the pump and left to warm up it starts up and runs fine again until it's left to stand for ages. Has anyone encountered this problem before is there something I have missed.

when you say it starts by putting fuel to the pump do you mean priming with a push button on the fuel filter (i ask because i dont know which way the granny fuel system is set up ) if so your diafram in the filter is shot and you arer pulling air in which is enough to stop it starting but when it runs it will pull enough through to run (its the diff between spinning on the key and running at 850 rpm )

What I did was make up a fuel system and put diesel direct to the pump without priming. I bypassed the fuel lines and the filter to see if it would start.

With the bleed screw open on the fuel filter can you pump fuel through with no air in it? Had a similar problen, ran OK when primed, but when left, the engine would not start till primed. Fault found to be the fuel filter, some intrepid soul had fitted two rubber joints in a recess made for one. The air was getting in there. Suggest you check the fuel filter assembly. Also suggest you drain the fuel filter as you may have a build up of water. regards Richard
