Sloshy water moving sound...strange!

My good neighbour over the road has a Granada very late model, just before the Scorpio came out the one with the 8v dohc 4 cyl 2 lt. motor.
Now, he came over yesterday and said that he could hear a sound, at a standstill, as he raised the revs (auto) he can hear water being moved around high up in the dash board...RUBBISH, says I, but I went out with him and there it is, his aircon is empty, heater works...spooky..
any suggestions?

My old Grannie Ghia '90 did this too, usually only when starting up and the first time you revved to move it sloshed behind the dash. It didn't have air con and the heater worked fine so I just forgot about it.

Great minds.

I knew that I had problems in my Mk3 when under braking a torrent of cold wet water poured down from the roof lining. Get him to check his drainage.

I had a 2.0 litre  H Reg Scorpio, with those symptoms.  The noise  eventually turned out to be caused by a crack in the cylinder head leading from the water passages to No 3 cylinder.  I believe it was a known fault with that engine, and can only be cured by replacing the head - not cheap, but some companies will fit a renovated head.

As the problem became worse, I noticed a loss of coolant but no visible leaks, then, finally, a lot of water vapour in the exhaust.

I did get the lights sorted...a kind suggestion from a knowledgable type, who asked if I'd opened the ashtray recently!!
Strange..but the answer WAS yes, it turns out that the lighter wire is uninsulated and can short onto the lighting wires causing the fault...I opened and shut the ashtray and hey presto...the lights went out!!
This is a great forum and no mistake!!!

The swooshing sound is common on the 2.0 DOHC 8v - my Granada is doing it at the mo and loosing some fluid.. I know it has a history of head/gasket work so I am kinda thinking something is not good.. But it still runs fine with no complaints...

Those engines are poo. They are notorious for head gasket failure and mine went at 70k. Luckily the head didnt crack as this is common as well........ Still it cost me £300 to get it done. that was after spending £400 on a toad alarm, god knows on how many gearboxes...... I sold the car 3 months later for £750 just to get rid.....

Yep it is.. As we know though.. bad maintenance and lack of coolant additive will errode the head gasket so no engine is safe... 2.0 16V is an I4 engine and evertthing is pretty much uniform and symetric with regard to cooling channels etc.

To be fair to the DOHC 8v considering the amount of cars that had it it doesnt fair that bad.. All those Granadas and Sierras!

It is said always leave the coolant in the engine which of course I do. But i wonder how long the anti-corrode additives in it stay good.
