EEC Fault finding

I have a 1995 12 valve Scorpio Ultima which uses I guess the EEC 1V PCM. I bought a Gunsons 3 pin fault finder and attached it to the lead in the engine compartment but it did not work, but worked perfectly on a Mondeo. My garage also could not get their computer to read the codes properly via this 3 pin connection. I have now found a 16 pin connector in the drivers side money box compartment. Could this connector be over riding the three pin and what equipment do I need to attach to this connection.
