What is this thing??

Dear All,
just getting into the DIY thing after reading the great site info (& not entirely trusting Ford Service depts anyway - with good reason - am I alone in this I wonder).

Anyway, had a thorough poke around the engine bay and in the offside just underneath the PAS pump I found something the shape of a can connected to 2 rubber hoses just lying there (not even fixed in place though screw lugs present)  Huh

From info gleaned from site, is this the ABS modulator?

Whatever it is, I'm assuming its ok to be left loose 'cos I can't see where it would be connected to bodywork.

I'd appreciate your advice,

if it was the abs pump it would be conected to the abs valve that has loads of brake pipes going to it.....

Have a read of this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/24v/24VDismantle.pdf and the associated pages and see if you can identify it your self.... But I think STN may have hit on it,  but your description is rather vague.

Hi Guys,
thanks for info. I've checked Snoopy's reference. Nope, definateley not the EGR. I'll try and follow the tubing to see where they go - but as you know it'd tight in there.

It's shaped like a can of beans, 3" diam, 3-4" long, black plastic, resting on top of the wheel arch. Hasn't anyone else got 1 of these  Huh

I'm hoping to get to the next Kent meet - perhaps someone will recognise it.

I'll be off line for a few days so I'll feed back asap

Cheers

Pegasus,
That sounds like the EVAP canister - it stores petrol fumes from the fuel tank and is purged regularly by the EVAP valve. Can you take a photo and see if we can confirm this?

Paul,

I think I know what you mean, but sadly I don't know what it does! We had a problem with it a couple of months ago - the two pipes (that connect to the can through a single adaptor) came away and caused, basically, some sort of vacuum/air leak. Basically, when switching the car off there was a hissing noise for a few seoncds after. The noise was also there when running, aditionally the car lacked power. When reconnected it was as though the car "re-learnt" the fact that this thing was there, and idled poorly for a few miles. After that, power restored and hissing gone.

Hope this is of some use!  Grin

Cheers

Well I reckon it could be a reservoir for the EGR system.
Has it got 2 pipes going to it & is a bit smaller than a coke can? It is usally (if I remember correctly) mounted towards the front of the inner wheel arch?

Thanks Eric, Dave & Howie,

yep looks a coke can.
I tube splits through T- junction: 1st  goes through front of engine then loops to just on inside of offside manifold to electrical connector (on other side from oil inlet) the 2nd goes to back of engine bay.
Other tube leaving "can" goes to an electrical connector on wing below windscreen washer reservoir.

I'll get hold of a digital camera this weekend and take some pics.

Cheers all,

Pegasus,
On reading your original post again I notice you mention it's beneath the PAS pump - so I think Howied's right.

If you mean on the drivers side of the car towards the front, the canister with 2 pipes can only be the reservoir for the vacuum system. The pipes connected to it should go to the engine inlet manifold - the second to a vacuum regulator mounted down on the drivers side of the engine bay. The vacuum is used for the EGR, EVAP, VIS (where fitted) and the Climate control, (where fitted)
If you look carefully on the engine sidewall just behind and beneath the offside front headlamp you should see the holes for the bolts that secure it on the forward curve of the front o/s wheel well.  When you resecure it make sure the pipes are all connected and not damaged or you'll get an unmetered inlet air leak and a poor idle.

Thanks All for input,

Hi All,
said I'd put the pics here. Well I've got 'em but have no idea how to put on the site (I've tried cut and paste, etc) . Is there something special I should be doing?
They confirm what Eric has said.
