Had this problem recently , turns out that the the contact area on the underside of the three buttons which is coated with conductive paint , sometimes loses it's effectiveness through age, dirt or just plain cussedness . You can stick little pieces of metal foil on the contacts with Superglue ( very fiddly ) or just buy Conductive Paint ( available from Maplins £4.99) and apply.
