I've looked at the parts that i thought relevant in the about section,but i can't find out what the big box is halfway between the airbox and the engine. there are two pipes going from the injector mixing chamber(for want of a better description) then they go into this box,and one larger diameter pipe comes out,finishing in the MAF and then the airbox. Any helps? Basically i want to know if it's ok to remove it and put a smaller Y-piece in its place.

That will be the "Resonator box" that will  It keeps the air flow into yo carb all nice, if you remove it you will have problems with the carburetion I think

Yup its a resonator,works in conjuction with the VIS (variable Inlet System) to smooth out the power delivery through the rev range. Bit like a trombone really
