Hunting - Stalling 2.3 DOHC

My Scorpio hunts and stalls. I replaced the ht leads, spark plugs, air filter, engine wireing loom. Checked all leads made sure they were all on and clean. I have even spayed the internal wires of the MAF sensor with carbon cleaner as this site says. My car is a LPG conversion. Has just been tuned at a place in Morpeth. I had checked for air leaks and never found any. My local LPG fitters also checked for air leaks never found any. They surgested it could be the throttle butterfly. Do these often wear or seaze? Do you think its possible it is the butterfly?

hi there we need a bit more to go on. is it stalling/hunting on both petrol and gas? or just one of them? is this a new thing? or is this why you've replace a lot of parts? let us know a bit more.....type of lpg kit, single or multi-point(if known) etc. as for the throttle body/butterfly, have a read of http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/HowDoI/Howdoi.html

Hello there, Now theres a point ive not noticed it to be stalling /hunting on petrol just gas. I only switch to gas when the car is warmed up. when at lights it can rev from 0.5 to 1.5rpm. If I rev her up she eventually goes away. If I Coast and turn a corner it trembbles to an almost stall. Sometimes it does stall mainly when using power steering. ive sprayed the butterfly and tried moving it with no good end results. The parts where added to prevent the casual backfireing and stalling Hunting. Backfireing has stopped but the hunting stalling continues. The kit is an old onejust had a new regulator fitted when they re tuned the engine at morpeth. The kit is a leanardo with a inside switch just a press switch. With 5 LED lights down the side of the black switch. The kit is about 4 - 5 years old. Its got a huge Block on the o/s of engine where it gives the gas to the engine. If I new how to put a pic in this messege id do it I have a few pics of the engine on my desk top. good close ones too. Cheers...Derek

I dont know much about codes im afraid. I have no software or even hard wear for that matter. I dont like the thought of a dear compresser. The manifold seems ok with no cracks from what I can see. Its differcult to inspect all around the manifold though. I have only had the car for 5 months so I dont know much on what it has had. Appart from the reciets I have. Which I has a good look when I bought the car.

Derek, If the car is running well while on petrol, the idle problem is unlikely to be caused by the IACV - it won't do any harm to clean it, but I doubt if it will be the cause. Look http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/16vcomponents.htm to identify the various components on your engine. The specialist mentions the throttle butterfly, and this can cause idle problems. If you look inside the throttle body (you'll see the quadrant that moves when you press the accelerator), inside is a circular plate that closes off the air intake to the engine. Spray that with carb cleaner until the plate moves freely and see if that helps. Otherwise you ought to have the gas supply checked.

hey look at all those flys trapped in the front of the rad, and as for the alloy top of engine. I polish mine with that wadding sure you use on alloy. There is someone on this site that washes his alloy wheels every week without fail. That's how it should be.

so that's where the spark plugs are hiding. no wonder i could not find them. So what's underneath that long metal cover on the left as you look at it. Bring back my transit vans. open the bonnet and there they are staring right at you. I could change them in less than 15 minutes

hi there what's that coily thing in front of the radiator? the last scorpio's were 1998 s & t regs. there was about 6000 of the facelifts made out of a total of nearly 100,000. johnv. that's the fuel injector rail. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/fuel/Fuel16VInj.pdf

Hold on Hold on one thing at a time lol. Whats wrong with the flys in my radiator? Without replaceing the radiator what am I ment to do with that? Wadding to clean the engine top? what wadding is that id like to get some? next... Eddie the spark plug cover that says 2.3 DOHC has been replaced its now on and costed me flippin £40.00 from ford. Pluss £1.00 each for screws and theres loads of them. I think the long metal cover which you are on about is actually plastic and it is the base for the wiring harness. Loads of wires in it. Next... The coily thing infront of the radiator is the LPG regulator. my car is a LPG conversion. The regulator heats the gas, the gas is heated from the water which passes through my regulator from the engine. and also allows the correct amount of gas to flow through properly. This is what I had replaced with a total of just under £300. This regulator has a screw on it which can be turned to increase or decrease the flow of gas (tuning). Next lol. http://tinypic.com/view.html?pic=1pfolw

hi there so that's where it is! i was looking for it, but couldn't find it. as eric pointed out, if it's ok on petrol then maybe the icv isn't to blame. next the butterfly/throttle body. did you give it a clean? any better? you don't need to do all the mods or even remove it. i done a not bad job just with carb cleaner and a rag. just hold the throttle open and clean away. start the engine every now and then to burn off everything. it does seem to be pointing to the lgp kit, gas doesn't burn as well as petrol. you could try closing the sparkplug gap to 0.85-0.9mm. see if this helps. also, is the lamdba sensor working ok? you might fine the mixture is wrong (too rich/ too lean) when in gear(engine load). if it's the lpg, then you need to go back to the lpg fitter. it'll kill a cat very quickly. too confirm the lpg kit is (maybe) at fault, run the car on petrol only for a couple of days. if it runs fine, then you narrowed it down by 50%!

hi there give the throttle body a clean and see how that goes. other than that, i would take it back to the lpg fitters. you paid for them to sort it and they haven't. up to them to figure it out. btw, how is your mpg? any difference? good or bad?

Well ive just squirted inside the butterfly with it still on the engine I used a torch firstly to see inside. It didnt seem that dirty but a little bit did come out the plate inside seems emaculate now. Lets see tomorow when I tank up with gas how things are. I would go out now but ive no gas left and with it being a sunday my local is shut. MPG on gas was between 22 and 23 MPG. As ive been driving with petrol for 3 days now. Its now showing 26MPG. Next time ill do it properly by taking it off the engine and clipping the screws. Cheers... Derek
