Help needed. It won't go into gear.

I have a 2.0l 16v manual and it's stuck outside cos I can't get it into gear.

I've tried pumping the clutch pedal but still nothing.I have tried all the gears but it's like the clutch will not dissengage.

The fluid reservoir is topped up and there doesn't appear to be any leaks.

Over to you guys, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,John.

hi there

i take it you're talking about not getting into gear with the engine running? what about with it off? it could be the linkage has snapped off or the clutch cable.

not sure as i have an auto. Undecided

Hi,

if the gear lever will not physically move into any of the positions it could be that a gearbox mount or similar has gone allowing the 'box to fall slightly thus preventing gear selection  Huh

I've managed to get it driving again. All I did was to put into first and then start the engine. It seems to drive and change gear o.k. now.

Does this mean the clutch is on it's way out ?

Can you feel the "spring in the clutch pedal when depressed? If it will go into gear with the engine off, put into reverse with ur foot firmly on the Brake pedal. Try and start the car. sumtimes the friction plate sticks and cranking the enigine over will free it. Can you give us more deatails?

 HTH

It could be a problem with the gearbox to prop coupling, I had same problem, allthough on that occasion I couldnt select a gear with engine on OR off.

Second time it happened,Gears could be selected with the engine off but not when engine was running, classic clutch problem.

You will need a new clutch assembly and release unit.
Make sur the repairer replaces the spigot bearing at the same time!!

ITs a hydraulic release mechanism not cable.

John, you might want to send a message to Geoff_W. He has been experiencing similar problems with his 2.0 16v manual. He maybe able to point you in the right direction Undecided

Kind regards
